Causes of constipation?

Someone help me please. I've had this problem for years but I drink water all the time, eat a fair amount of veggies and fruits, and I exercise reguarly. So what else might be the cause of my lack of bowel movements? I went on a juice fast last weekend combined with cayenne pepper supplements from a dr. Schultz here in Southern California. I think it helped a little bit but I don't feel any strong, permanent change from it, at least not what other people have reported.

First time juice fasting...

Hello all,
I planning to start a 21-30 day juice fast on monday, am looking for advice/encoragement as this is the first time i fasted on juice.
Completed a 7 day water fast three years ago which was one hell of an ordeal, but changed my view of reality for good!
can't do water this time due to work constraints, and hope the detox is not as extreme as with water?
My plan is to keep away from citrus and include alot of veg, esp dark green vegies.
How much juice would people recomend per day?
Any risks i should know about?

Thankyu xx

Hi all! I'm new to the group and thought I could introduce myself. I've only recently become interested in fasting , but would really like to try. I want my first experience to be reassuring, if not successful (I'm sure that many first fasts do not last as long as intended). I can already see several stumbling blocks, and I'm hoping for some advice. I am a smoker and regularly drink coffee and (I know..it's awful) soda. I don't want to wait until I quit smoking to try the first time, because that is an excuse I see a lot of people use to not make all kinds of changes. I've read that tea with blackstrap molasses is alright during a juice fast; are they talking about black/green/white/herbal tea (I'm asking about caffeine consumption here). I am a snacker and have decided to try to actually get myself in the habit of one meal a day for at least a week before I try; was the information that led me to this decision good? I'm a little afraid of the emotional effects of the frugivorous diet. All I have heard about this is bad, bad, bad; is there any goodness to it, during the first ten days? Also, I have two children, and this requires me to have all kinds of food around the house; besides discipline, I don't know what kind of advice anyone could give me about that, but any is welcome! Thaks.

ABC TV looking for breatharian families

My name is Amanda Gershkowitz and I am a Casting Associate Producer for ABC families hit reality show 'Wife Swap.' We are currently casting for our fifth season and we are looking for BREATHARIAN families:

Breatharianism, in which believers claim food and possibly water are not necessary, and that humans can be sustained solely by prana (the vital life force in Hinduism), or according to some, by the energy in sunlight.

Perhaps you or someone you know would be interested in this unique and exciting opportunity. We are looking for a family that is proud of their way of life and would be open to teaching another family about Breatharianism.

We cast everywhere from Maine to California, and this would bring a fun and unique dynamic to the show.

The premise of Wife Swap is simple: for seven days, two wives from two different families with very different values exchange husbands, children and lives (but not bedrooms) to discover what it's like to live a different family's life. It's an interesting social experiment and a great way to see your family in a whole new light. It is shot as a documentary series, so NO scripts and no set. It's just one camera that is documenting your life.

Families that appear on the show will receive a financial honorarium for lost wages, time and commitment. And if you refer a family that appears on the show you would receive $1000.

Here at 'Wife Swap' we look for a two-parent home with at least one child between the ages of 6 and 17 living at home full time.
If you are interested, please email me your contact information and tell me a little about your family. Or if you would like to refer a family, please email me their contact information and I will be in touch.

Thank you!

Issues with fasting- particularly master cleanse

Hey everyone-

I have done the master cleanse once for 8 days, and it was a great experience. I felt light, energetic, lost some weight and decided I definitely want to do it on a regular basis. So that's where I'm coming from for this post.

Then I chatted with my doc about it. She thinks that fasting every so often is a good idea in general, trusts alternative practitioners, and treats me with herbs, diet changes, etc. whenever possible. However, she had the following reservations about the master cleanse:

1- Cayenne pepper can be toxic at certain doses (she did not specify a dose). So be careful about your intake of it, especially if it's one of only 3-5 ingredients you are ingesting. (As she said, parsley can cause cancer in high enough doses. Just because it's "natural" or herbal does not mean it isn't powerful and potentially harmful in the wrong dose).

2- Protein intake is important. Since you are not taking in much if any protein on the master cleanse, your body will pull it from somewhere. That somewhere will be your internal organs and your muscles. She suggested that some sort of fast that incorporates protein shakes or something may be better. I know Burroughs addresses the protein thing, but medically speaking, I suspect he doesn't know what he's talking about. I don't believe he's a doctor. I also know that he wrote the book some time ago, and new nutritional information has since come to light.

I hate it when folks get on tribes just to be nay-sayers. But talking with her made me reconsider doing a straight master cleanse again, so I wanted to share this information with all of you. I think my next fast will be a combo of MC, fruit & veggie juices, and protein shakes. Of course, my doctor suggested I only fast under the care of an alternative practitioner who knows what they're doing.

Anecdotally, some of my friends have verified apparent loss of muscle mass, and have definitely had issues with the intake of so much sugar as the only calorie source. It's just so difficult to identify what is detox and what is a reaction to sugar, pepper, etc. Although it seemed to work well for me, I know the MC isn't for everyone. Now I'm wondering if there may be a better standard fast for most of us.

Be well!

Can anyone link me or explain what exactly the body does when it's fasting?
I love to fast. (only do it about once or twice a year) but it feels so good.
I notice a strange smell coming from my arm pits during these periods.

the thing is, I notice it right now.
I'm not fasting from food, but I have totally stopped smoking cannabis and it's been a few days.
I was smoking it every day for about 6 years.
and now...welll....I don't have much of an appetite, so I've been eating very little

and I'm wondering if my body is cleansing itself like a fast?
I know it's always at work
but that smell....
it smells like detox to me.

I know it's kind of a strange circumstance but I would appreciate any insight.

Dark circles under eyes

So does anyone have a definitive answer on what causes these and how to sucessfully eliminate them?

I have been battling them for years now, and where as I used to think it was because I smoke a lot of pot, I have learned that there is definitely another cause (I have friends who are MUCH bigger stoners than me and thier eyes are clear).

I know the standard get lots of sleep bit, but I am more interested what internally can be causing this. My latest research leads towards malnutrition, and possible B or C vitamin deficiency.

I have also read that almond oil topically can help, but again this is treating the symptoms vs. getting @ the cause.

Any ideas or info? :-)

Thanks!

One-quarter of what you eat keeps you alive.
The other three-quarters keeps your doctor alive.
(Hieroglyph found in an ancient Egyptian tomb.)

1 Corinthians 6:
13 Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for FORNICATION, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body. This MEATS is not Flesh.

CLEANING the INSIDES
MATTHEW 23
23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

CLEANING the INSIDES
MARK 7
15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.

CLEANING the INSIDES
MARK 7
18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;

19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?

20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.

22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

39 And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.

14 day Lifefood Nutritional and Liver Cleanse Blog

reposting my blog here so it can be of use to all us cleansers! if you respond here i may not answer, but if you message me personally on tribe as well, i'll get the message. thanks!

Aloha Friends and Family,

I am a Cleansing Superhero!

I am currently on day 10 of the Jubbs 14 day Lifefood Nutritional Fast. This is an intensive cleanse that I have done once before about 2 years ago full-length and one 5 day version last spring. This is a cellular rejuvenation cleanse focusing on the upstream. Upstream cleansing is above the diaphram (liver and gallbladder). It is important to get the liver and gallbladder, the main sewage plant cleared before trying to achieve a lasting colon cleanse. if you cleanse the colon first, it won't last because the toxified organs up the digestive stream just help to create more of the problem conditions in the colon.

The cleanse involves eating only Lifefood blended into soups, smoothies, drinks, and drinking some medicinal teas. Wearing castor oil packs on liver/gallbladder and ascending, transverse, and descending colon 2 times a day. Drinking apple cider vinegar 4 times a day. Eating powdered wildcrafted vital herbal formulas on slices of fruit (to activate them with parotid hormone in saliva for better digestion.) 3 days of liver/gallbladder flushing by drinking 4-6 oz of olive oil and 4 oz of lemon juice wtih coffee enema after.

I have been studying to become a certified Phoenix Fastician with Dr. David Jubb, PhD in new york and have been learning lots about this cleanse, the herbs, and how to read a person like a book in a health reading with cleanse and nutritional support. This is a True Healing Theraputic. There are many cleanses out there, but most miss the boat in some respect. Most don't look much to optimum nutrition during the cleanse and just offer suppliments to take. Most don't focus on the most important organ, the general, the most overworked and over toxified Liver. The Jubbs Cleanse takes care of all that. Because of the amazing nutrition, you are gently supported instead of stripped down like many cleanses like the Master Cleanse. If you're already in optimal health that might be ok, but most of us need the gentle support. It can be devistating to water fast or master cleanse to those with weakened immune systems.

So now that I've studied a bit with the Dr., it's amazing to see how much improvement is showing in my cleanse since last time. I feel like a rock star of cleansers! I've been able to be much more positive in my outlook, enjoying the cleanse much more. The hightened clarity i've received is such a gift. On the 5-day one i did last spring and definitly on this one, I am understanding my body's messages so quickly and clearly. The ones I'm getting big time are that my colon is sluggish and to never eat late at night. I ate late at night one night and paid for it with more outbreak of hives and feeling kind of groggy and slightly hungover. it all makes sense now. don't fill up your system with food and make it work while you're trying to rest at night! it's a total aggrivation to the system and makes symptoms worse!

I've also learned to fine-tune the cleanse with kundalini yoga, and sound healing with gong, tuning forks, & singing bowls. I'm also committing to percussion to the liver and gallbladder and massage of the gallbladder and colon. this was instrumental to a productive harvest of nasty little gall stones and some disgusting intestinal mucus. if you're brave and want to look at the pics, here's a link. www.flickr.com/photos/663...3715299990/

this cleanse has really offered me a chance to organize and discover the power of making all your own super nutrition food at home. with lifefood (raw food without hybrids like carrots, beets, bananas, corn, dates, legumes, grains) it's all about organization. i'm going to make cheat sheets to hang in the kitchen for things like timing of doses, reminders to soak nuts/seeds for milking, timing of cracker dehydration, etc. i'm so grateful to have found my new little hobbit healing temple. i have my own place wich means my own kitchen and bathroom. i have been wanting this for a while now so that i can do this cleansing and heal up old health issues. to my abounding health!

It's amazing how the body, mind, emotions, and spirit are linked! When I'm flushing out the stones and feeling kind of queezy all kind of crummy emotions come up. sometimes i will literally detox something out. last time i detoxed out the "wheel of fortune" theme song! it just looped over and over in my head till a shaman kitty came and massaged it out of my colon when i did the 5-day at Eden Hot Springs last summer. This time i have been working through feelings if incapability and insecurity as well as fear of death. also, on day 3, while feeling fiesty and superpowered, i received a call that brought an opportunity to test my spirituality, courage, and compassion. it all went well, i made a new friend, and helped to empower a sister going through a hard time! Jah works in gloriously mysterious ways always in perfect time!

all in all, the cleanse has been a wonderful boost to my energy, health, self-esteem, courage, discipline, willpower, flow and clarity of communication, inspiration, motivation, and intuition. I have realized that i am indeed making room for the light in my life by clearing out the toxins. all the emotions that are coming up represent the old me that clings (literally) to my insides making me sick. It's so refreshing to look in the toilet and poke around at my shit, literally and figuratively! Don't think for a second that all that crud coming out doesn't have an emotional, psychic, and spiritual component. the chinese know what they're talking about. supprisingly, i haven't dealt with too much anger this cleanse, wich is what the liver is connected with. some minor frustrations, that's all. i stand by my theory that it doesn't matter which comes first the chicken or the egg. that is to say, cleanse either your mind, emotions, spirit, physical body, and the rest will naturally catch the momentum of the first. just do it and get the ball rolling. gotta start somewhere!

if you have questions or would like to do this cleanse, please let me know. i am glad to be of service as i have time. it is good for me as a phoenix fastician in training to field some questions.

Learn more by buying these two books. the first is a recipe book with recipies for the cleanse that goes over an older version of the cleanse (still powerful and no buying of herb formulas.) the second is a scientific book with info on blood formation, cellular rejuvenation, powerful therapies nobody talks about, the underlying cause of dis-ease. it has an updated super-powered version of the cleanse.

so i read somewhere in a fasting book about loosing the mucus plug from your intestines. I am now on the master cleanse and wondering if you loose a mucus plug in this method. Or, can anyone tell me where i read about loosing the plug? the book had pictures and different versions of the cleanse. the author was a raw foodist and wrote a lot about he and his wife.
thanks

I have michael werners book, I belong to one breatharian support group and another support group that supports my choices but I think I am the only one there who is liquidarian.

So I am feeling a bit lonely..lol

Sure could use a few liquidarian friends!

master cleanse experience.........

so last monday i started the master cleanse, my goal was 10 days. on day three i felt amazing, so much energy, so clear headed....then on day 4 and 5 things started going downhill...my emotions and thoghts were erratic and my stomach started hurting. by the fifth night i was super nauseaous, i could not even think about a lemon without wanting to wretch.........

so on day six i said forget this, and switched to juice....my goal was 10 days for the fast...but i don't know anymore...my body felt pretty messed up from that whole lemonade concoction....i am feeling way better now. i have been drinking apple juice and vegetable broth......maybe i will finish the 10 days, but am a little worried about my health given how sick that lemon stuff was making me.... do you think i should just break the fast entirely or stick it out with the juice???

what's even more strange, is that i have done the master cleanse before and never had this problem, but i do not think i will ever be doing it again, given my new aversion to lemons(;

anyone else ever had this type of experience?

Aloha all God’s children the seekers of life.

Today the man has finished his treatment with flying colors. He came about 3 weeks ago with a bleeding rectum. It was so bad know other colon therapist would take him in. So after looking him over and seeing how much pain he was inn. I decided to take him on.

The first thing I did was teach his how to insert a piece of aloe in his rectum to stop the bleeding, to heal the tear in his prostate.

For the first 5 days, I had him fast and insert a piece of aloe after each bowl movement. And drink 12 oz. of this formula I have every morning and 4 oz’s every night before bed. This helped him with his bowl movement. At first it was a little painful. Then each day I had him come in and put on gloves and massage his prostate with aloe every 15 minute for an hour. Each day the pain was getting less. After 7 days of this he was ready for a special speculum I ordered just for men with swollen prostate.

When a person has this kind of condition and this kind of pain it is best for them if they insert the speculum, it’s less painful. And he did great. He was a trooper. I don’t believe a person has to suffer to be healed. He fasted for 2 more weeks, on the master cleanse, Psyllium, honey, colonic with a 150 minerals, elements, ions, electrolytes and love.

This is not a cure for prostate, just a story of a brave man who was not ready to die yet.

The food that is the foundation of our being is Minerals and Elements.

Our LIFE force, or Being,
The food that is the foundation of our being is Minerals and Elements.

The blood that flows thru our veins is the fuel that gives us LIFE.

When the blood in our veins is perfect, the blood will take on the shape of a doenut and this doenut is full of oxygen, nurturance, and minerals and elements. When the doenut is out of shape the being is starving from the lack of these precious life giving elements.

When the blood is perfect, the immune system will take over and start healing the body, mind and soul.

Trace Minerals are the Foundation of Health

Chemical balance within the body is facilitated by the manipulation of minerals and elements. An abundant and replenished mineral nutritional supply is essential to excellent health. Always remember that the body can use minerals without vitamins, but it can’t use vitamins without minerals and elements. Minerals and elements are the solid foundation upon which all nutrition is built. As important as vitamins are, minerals and elements are even more important. Many vitamins and other complex chemicals needed by the body are actually manufactured within the body itself. The minerals and elements, however, which are the basic building blocks making up these complex substances, must be nutritionally present, or the system is lacking its essential ingredients. When this happens the body tries to live off the toxins.

The body has many systems to keep in balance for health. While minerals and elements do the majority of the heavy work, the trace minerals and elements can be compared with the small weights on a balance beam. These tiny weights, though small, are absolutely vital for achieving optimum health. When complex systems are being considered, it is the fine tuning that leads to optimal performance.

If the mucoid plaque is not cleaned out of our colons we are rob of our nurturance, minerals and elements. Our systems will just recycle the toxin that is trapped in the mucoid plaque. The toxins are like a poison that is robbing us of our God given life force.

This is what Dr. Leonard Smith, MD, of Florida had to say about toxicity in the body.
“Even if we lived in a pristine world with no chemicals, no pollution, pure water, and pure food, still, with the passage of time we would experience cellular toxicity.”
The very air we are breathing is full of toxins.

The liquid that flows thru our entire body and around very cell is the life force that feeds our cells and gives our body, mind and soul life.

The ocean in our cells is the same as the ocean of our Mother Earth.
The water inside our Earthly Mother is the same water as our Mother Earths womb.
We laid in this water for 9 months when we were conceived.
That is if our Earthly Mothers were eating healthy and living a clean life.

The ocean of our Mother Earth is pure Minerals and Elements. Even thou the ocean is as polluted as it is, it is steal cleaner then the blood of most humans.

On the BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS of seawater, when blood was not unavailable; Doctors would injected seawater in the veins of patients, who recovered on the seawater just as well as patients having had blood transfusions of plasma.
(Linda Clark).

In order to use the Ocean as a cleanser you MUST know how to collect, purify and filter it or you could have some serous problems. The water in our taps is full of all kinds of pollutant, like chemicals or lead acetate and has to be purified or it will end up causing us serous problems. I think there is only one plant in our universe that man has not polluted yet and that is because it is to hot to get to. (Sun)

By using the minerals and elements as a bowel cleaner to remove the mucoid plaque, not only will you be cleaning out the mucoid plaque from the colon, but at the same time will you be feeding your body with the minerals and elements and at the same time you are reviving your immune system.

Connected to your colon is these veins called portal veins. The pores in our colon are connected to the portal veins and these portal veins takes the minerals and elements straight to the liver and our liver then turns the minerals and elements into pure blood. ( Live foods = high-test, processed foods = unleaded) Our bodies are very fine tune machines.

The body needs good blood in order to work properly and to feel good and alive. When your blood is toxic the bowels become acidic and then the body becomes tired and sick. An acidic colon is a open door for disease.

In order for all this to work properly fasting is necessary. Until we let go of the world, the world will not let go of us. The mucus in our bodies is a must, the mucus is there to help the feces to pass thru the colon. But when this mucus becomes thick with toxins, it becomes so thick that it blocks us from getting our life giving oxygen, nurturance, and minerals and elements and becomes what is called mucoid plaque and then comes the body snatchers (parasites) come and suck more of our life force out of us.

Aloha All children of my father.

If you know where Jesus did the healing of the multitudes, you will understand that when he talked about water in the essene gospel, you might realize he is truly talking about minerals and elements.

1 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan; (the Dead Sea)

2 And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.

Sciences know that if we have a 150 minerals and elements as our foundation we are disease free.

Trace Minerals are the Foundation of Health
Chemical balance within the body is facilitated by the manipulation of minerals. An abundant and replenished mineral nutritional supply is essential to excellent health.

The Dead Sea is where Jesus healed the multitudes, if all he had to do is point or say and you are healed, then why did he go there to heal them.

The rest is up to you.

Hello all. Just got reaquianted with Tribe and very happy that I did. A little about me. I'm 22 and have been struggling with my weight since pre-pruberty. Been yo-yoing just about as long. I was able to get down to a healthy weight once in my life, and I'm looking to do it again. I have about 30 lbs to lose. Here's my liquid diet plan that I came up with based off of what I've learned in the past about my body's chemical reactions and my current low income.

Morning: 4 oz. Fruit smoothy diluted w/ 8oz. water
Mid-Morn: 8 oz. V8 w/ 1 tbls. flaxseed oil & 8oz. water
Lunch: 1 serv. whey protein mix w/ 8oz. water
Mid-Day: 8 oz. V8 w/ 1tbls. flaxseed oil & 8 oz. water
Dinner: 1 serv. whey protein mix w/ 8 oz. water

Along with the reg vitamins, Ultimate Metabolic Fat Burner & Guggul

I'm not looking for critizism or any costly ideas, but a positive opinion or some helpful advice would be nice. Thanks all and great to meet ya!

Recovery from the meningococcal meningitis and sepsis using therapeutic fasting and Complimentary and Alternative Medicine

http://www.fastingconnection.com/incredible-cures.html

A History Of My Illness (English version)
I am the author and originator of a unique and powerful medication free neuro-
rehabilitation method (“Recovery Integral Training Adaptation Method") using therapeutic fasting and Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) This method is particularly effective for people who have suffered cerebral brain injuries and inflammation of the brain.
My forthcoming book, "My system of health or 25 Years Without Medication" (available early 2007) is a detailed account of how I made a full recovery from the most virulent strain of bacterial meningitis using my neurorehabilitation method. vld707@list.ru

I would like to share my story of success about my 24 day water fast while suffering from meningococcal meningitis plus meningococcemia (sepsis). In my book; “Incurable Diseases and Alternative Medicine". Phoenix Publishing House, (or in Russian; Rostov-on-the-Don, Russia, 2006) I give a detailed account of how I treated and cured myself some twenty-five years ago.

http://www.fenixrostov.ru/topics/book/?id=O0028643

In the winter of 1980 when I studied in Residency at Kursk Medical College on the general therapy of internal diseases, I gradually developed bad headaches which plagued me throughout the whole month, and I was also struck by a chronic cold. I did not grasp the cause of my ailments and started an exercise routine- mostly jogging-as an attempt to boost my immune system the natural way. However a few days later, I was sent to hospital with an ominous fever of 40c!

Initially I was admitted to hospital after consulting the attending doctor, even though the cause for my sickness was still unknown. By this stage I also had a fit of vomiting. Before nightfall I had an intuition that, I may have contracted meningitis! And how right I was!

Almost two days went by before doctors were able to confirm my own diagnosis. (At first they thought I had gone mad!) Drifting in and out of consciousness I was in no state to discuss my condition with them even though I tried.

On one fine day-after five days of unconsciousness- I awoke with a sensation of unimaginable ease in my body. A sensation which I had previously never experienced. "Have I returned alive?" Was the first though that passed through my mind on this day in Early February 1980.

It was only the beginning of what was to be a relentless battle of body and spirit. At the time it had not yet been established that the meningitis had caused oedema on the brain. The day before my birthday my joints had swollen and became crimson: both talocrural and wrist, and joints on two fingers on the left hand were also affected. In the morning my body temperature was 37.5 C, and by the evening it had gone up to 39 C. For most of the night I felt drowsy and slept for only two to three hours due to the septic temperature (a septic polyarthritis).

Because of strong pains in the wrist joints I could not wash independently without help, and had to use my torso to manoeuvre the rest of me out of bed and on to the floor. The spinal lumbar punctures (they were seven in all during my illness)added to my misery as for almost 2 weeks I was not able to bend my waist as a nerve had been touched. Any attempt to bend led to piercing pains in my right leg. The lumbar punctures were a necessary evil as the doctors could only establish from an extraction of spinal fluid the true nature of the infection. Once this sample was analysed the doctor informed me that he now knew how to proceed with the correct treatment.

The next spinal puncture appeared to be unsuccessful, although this was not a first. "I have worked for 18 years and it is the second case in my practice!" Exclaimed the neuropathologist. At that moment I went cold, and my legs began to shiver. Let's try again tomorrow on a couch, because of pains in my back, I said. Next day a nurse technician helped me to bend my back on a firm couch and, at last, after the jab, have received the long-awaited spinal fluid.
My attending physician admitted to the consultant that he has never had to treat someone with a purulent bacterial meningitis. And because of his lack of experience he did not diagnose the sepsis, and that is why he continually asked, why I had such a fever and skin haemorrhage. The answer could be seen clearly from my crimson joints: As a result of this incompetence, I feared I would end up with gangrene on my left hand fingers! Listen carefully all you professionals! If I am still alive it is most probably down to the following reasons: 1) I had a young organism and in the past followed a regular fitness regime. 2) At the treating doctor's home his wife was a doctor too, who was constantly kept up to date regarding my treatment, 3) Huge desire to live.

I clenched my teeth and refused additional pain killers. These were in the form of injections which were kindly prescribed by my doctor. He was surprised, and wanted to know why I declined the offer. I told the doctor that I have already received eight injections of penicillin! on 3 million units a day intramuscularly, and a Dimedrol with Analginum. I was forced to request pain killers only at night so that I could sleep. The heat was so intense and intolerable. My buttocks were already swollen from all the injections, so there was no option but to suffer.

My diagnosis sounded like a verdict: The residual phenomena meningococcal infections (meningitis and a sepsis) with the raised craniocereberal pressure, extrapyramidal disturbances (defeat subcrustal ganglia substances of a brain due to encephalitis) and fatigue syndrome.

Translated into ordinary language, it would mean: Constant headaches day and night which made me climb up the wall, 4 hours of hallucinations late at night, and awaking early with shaky legs, dizziness, weakness in the right hand and a leg. These symptoms increased with the change of weather, and I also experienced a constant tremor of head and painful spasms in leg muscles, decrease in memory and concentration, fatigue and emotional imbalance in the form of vulnerability, despondency's, depression, etc.

I gradually got back on my feet after my consciousness adapted to these new conditions of existence. It took three full months to fully understand this. At the time I did not know the extent of my brain damage, but the impairment of my cognitive and emotional functions was widespread. Having plenty of time to reflect on the above situation, I tried hard to find myself. Most involuntary body functions continued to work perfectly after I had the hypo-stasis of a brain. However, I also experienced a big change in my perception: It seemed to me that the whole world had grown dull and the sensation of being alive was all but lost. Despite of this, in my mind I did not succumb to the desire to surrender to this inevitable vicissitude of life.

My speech was in no way impaired, and although I could read, the word meaning (semantics) was at times absent. It was necessary to re-read a text several times over in order to grasp the meaning. As for the type face, there were some curved lines which simply did not register, and I often skipped lines too; so it became a necessary task to correct these idiosyncrasies, which was in itself quite exhausting! Although my sight and hearing did not suffer, my ears were strained, especially during barometric changes where it became difficult to understand some spoken words.

To write using a pen was a problem as the hand would simply not obey. The usual pen reminded me of a piece of a stiff piece of wood which was difficult to hold. This made the task of writing a difficult process. I knew when it was about to rain, because my right hand weakened, and the right leg stumbled a
little. There were times when I walked along the street stumbling about like a drunkard. Co-ordination of my limbs was impaired to such a degree that my neighbours and elderly folk were left perplexed.

Sometimes I did not want to watch TV programs due to severe headaches also I did not know, what to do to reduce that pain in my head. Sometimes I felt that my brain was malfunctioning and I got panic attacks from this. Reading was the only thing which offered an occasional respite from this inner turmoil.
There was no peace in the afternoon, or at night, as sleep and pain killers, did not facilitate the condition, or strengthen the weakness. It seemed as though life had lost its sense. It was very enduring test and quite seriously dampened my spirits, causing a sense of fear and a hopelessness and self pity. “Why did this happen to me and will I ever be normal?” Was a recurring question. Any spark of hope was only short lived, as I was clinging to life with a sense of apathy and powerlessness. And this plunged me even deeper into the precipice of despair. My Soul was hurting and this pain cannot be compared to a physical pain! The only way this pain can be grasped is to actually experience it for oneself.

My long term memory was not affected, but I could not recall the last names of many actors.

There were instances when my brain disconnected for some seconds, losing the sense of what I was doing. I realised the sad future ahead of me when even the meaning of well assimilated words was lost! Doctors felt sorry for me, but were powerless, as in the textbooks on neurology it is specified, that only drugs can be of benefit in restoring one's health. I attended the outpatient clinic for four months where I received medication by way of injections which were a heavy burden on the liver. After this I was forced to go for various state Medical examinations for assessing my level of disability. I was offered 3 groups of physical disability status, but I turned them down! “And you will not deceive us and recover?” asked the disability medical examiners at my local office. On the contrary, I had made a firm resolution to make a full recovery. Half a dozen doctor-neurologist examined me, non of them were able to say if I could make a recovery of if I would be able to work again.

The main obstacle to restoring my health was the absence of knowledge on the complex rehabilitation procedures of patients with neuroinfection, so there were only limited practical recommendations that were given. I also required psychological support to get rid of the complexes created by my illness, at least giving me a glimmer of hope, which even the doctors looking after me did not have.

During this period a new solution arrived square on my lap in the form of a book. A doctor from the outpatient clinic where I was receiving treatment presented me with the first edition of "Fasting for the sake of health" by Professor Nikolaev. The doctor stretched out his arm handing me the book and said, "Volodya! it should help you!"

In honesty, I had nothing to lose, and I was ready to try something radically different. I was not even frightened at the prospect of dying from fasting as in the book it went into detail about the successes that had been achieved with curing so called "incurable" diseases, even though there was nothing on my particular disease, and the more so about a regenerative diet there existed, and only I have found the description of this diet and pair examples of treatment in proceedings of regional library after traumas of a brain, stroke.

When commenced the fast, my mum- the doctor physician with over 40-years experience and a Second World War veteran, did not begin to dissuade me but was very fearful that I could die from it. But when he witnessed the first positive results two weeks into my fast he calmed down.

In that hot summer of 1980, during the 24 day therapeutic water fast I lost at total of 16 kg, but the co-ordination of body movements was restored, the liver functions improved and consequently my complexion returned, and most importantly was the belief in my ability to make a full recovery! I was not able to bring myself to tell the truth to the attending neuropathologist why I had grown so very thin. I stretched the truth and explained that I was on a forced diet due to a poor appetite.(At that time alternative methods of treatment and fasting was regarded by most doctors as wild. And those who applied these "fringe" methods on oneself where considered to be totally insane). I shall not tire the reader with intricate details of my dietary techniques and hunger cure (water fasting) as there is plenty of available literature on these subjects, and you can also read my book on alternative medicine. I can mention however, that the effects form this long fast such as: an obvious acidosis crisis, thirst and dizziness did not interfere with the fast as they did not occur , as much of my time was spent breathing fresh air, going on long walks, having enemas and by drinking plenty of boiled water and broth of boiled Dogrose which helped clear my intestines and I also took many warm baths. The baths served to relax and to detox the skin and kidneys.

My fast ended after 24 days although I had planned for it to go on 25 days. I ended it earlier due to leg spasms which were due to neural imbalances caused by meningitis rather than the fast. At the time I did not know how to prevent them, and prior to the 24 day water fast, I did not purify the body on a vegetarian diet. So undoubtedly, my liver was overburdened with toxins waste from medications, so a word of caution, don't repeat the same mistakes!

My chronic bronchitis which I suffered from for ten years has now ceased, and my regenerative period has passed by smoothly on vegetable and fruit juices, porridge (no added salt, sugar or animal proteins)

I was broken physically but not spiritually. It was virtually impossible to find books on alternative health at the time but my intuition guided me back to good health. For eleven months I visited of the outpatient clinic and I had enough time to rethink the past and to search for new ways of healing.

I loved my work as a medical doctor and in January, 1981 I began work at a city therapeutic hospital as a physician. After long hours at work, I was so tired that there was little physical or spiritual energy left continue with my daily houselhod routines. Even getting up from the couch was hard work. My organism was flat, but it was still necessary to continue with my research. Months passed by and my health improved very slowly. I knew that my slow recovery and lack of energy was due to the meningitis and this really frustrated me.

In October-1984 I was offered a new position - Chief of medical department in the 60 bed therapeutic branch. By that time, my health had improved by 50% but was not trustworthy enough to hold down this new position. (at the time I was age 32) My former head physician told to me that if you undermine your weak state of health by taking up this new position, you may irreversibly damage your health. But I was lucky because my dream to be a chief of a medical department came true and I was able to restore my health and rebuild my life through my career. No one was able to understand at the time how significant that was for me.

My professional growth moved forward quickly as I tried to make up for lost time. Frequent improvements of my professional skill and constant self-education have served to deepen my knowledge on many specialities - my field of expertise was on general therapy. This new professional life style did not permit me to follow the advice and words of caution given to me by my neurologists, as I was constantly under stress. However, I managed to carry out the student's dream - become chief of branch and a qualified doctor, despite of all the odds!

During my illness I consumed a large quantity of medications, and the colour of my face bared witness to this. On one fine day I made a firm resolve not to take any more medication whatsoever, because I could end up with cirrhosis of the liver. As a medical doctor I clearly understood that taking too much medication could be dangerous for the body, especially the liver. I did not have any other symptoms as a result of the toxic side effects of medications. However, I never took a blood test for evaluating the state of health of my liver during my illness, but I did check my thyroid gland because my head was affected – that was fine. I suppose I did not get toxic hepatitis, I did not experience any pain in my liver either. On the other hand, I did suffer from stopping the drugs I was on to normalise my sleep. The symptoms were, leg spasms, trembling and a poor sense of balance. In order to purge the body and liver, I replaced the medications with a regime of hot baths. These were done daily for a period of 20 minutes, and caused profuse sweating. Straight after the bath I put on some warm clothes and laid down in bed for 40 minutes to continue sweating out the toxins. This caused leg spasms and shivering. After this I went to work. In this way I successfully cleansed my body and to this day have refused to take any medications. I also achieved my dream of improving my health and benefiting from a new vigourous life.

In 1986 I learned to run again, having begun with 15 minute runs, working my way up to one hour sessions. It was not easy. I stopped only when my pulse reached 120-140 beats a minute. For some months I experienced annoying twitching sensations and muscle cramps in my legs, but with a great deal of persistence I continued to train.

Twenty five years passed and much has changed in my life; I have visited America; began to practice homeopathy and other methods of the Naturopathy, and developed my own system of health improvement. I look younger than my age, I still work long hours continuing with my alternative health research and write books. The greatest victory however, remains the victory of choosing and fighting for the road to life over illness and perhaps even death. This remains in the forefront of my mind and helps me overcome all life difficulties. The 'real' medicine for me over and above the work I love, is the condition of my soul.

The love for all life and aspiration to help others to achieve the impossible. In this case being able to understand and accept deep seated feelings and conditions of feebleness and wretchedness is the medicine which enabled me to summon all my inner resources in accordance with Natural Law. This influenced my health on a physical level thus playing a significant and secondary role in getting me back on the road to good health. My Book “A prayer of survival” is a homage to the virtues of Patience, Gratitude, Trust and the will to live.

I started to prepare myself over the past few days; I've been day- fasting since the solstice and today I have commenced my first water fast; as of yet, I am unsure of how long this will continue for, but I am hoping my willpower will at least get me through the next few days...
I don't really know what to expect, I just know I need to cleanse, heal and reconnect...

I'm really looking forward to eating again! We are going to be complete vegetarians (no dairy).
!st Time Master Cleanser

Hello everyone - I just jioned the MC tribe and had some questions that I hope to get some answers to. I am currently on the 6th day of my cleanse.

1. On the second day, I woke up with pain and soreness in my solar plexes region. I did the salt water flush hoping that would help. Probably about 15 to 20 minutes after I vomited the salt water out. In the next two hours the pain got very severe and I was crouched in a fetal position moaning. It felt exactly like a gall stone attack (I know this because I have had gallstone attacks before). I had my gall bladder removed by surgery 14 years ago. In about 3 hours the pain subsided and I just slept and slept. I continued with the MC protocol. Can someone please let me know why I might have had this severe reaction? Has anyone else experienced anything like this while on the MC?

2. Yesterday, (Day 5) I was so cold. I did some research online and found out that people who are blood type O tend to have poor clirculation (I can vouch for this since I am blood type O) and their body temperature may drop. To counter this one can increase the amount of cayenne pepper and even use it topically, specially on the feet. Funny thing, I intuitively had increased the amount of cayenne pepper this morning and then read the online article later). My question is regarding using the cayenne pepper topically. Has anyone does this? If so do you have to make it into a paste with water or something?

3. Lastly, I just also found out that it is a good idea to rinse your mouth after drinking the "lemonade" since the citric acid and ascorbic acid can hurt the enamel of your teeth. Apparently citric acid and ascorbic acid binds with the calcium turning it into calcium citrate and calcium ascorbate - FYI - The link is below:

Thanks for all your help,
Imrana

I'm doing it!

So today I have started the Master Cleanse.

People always say there is a point where feeling sick and sluggish and overweight just becomes too much! Well, yesterday was that day for me. It came on all of a sudden and in a flash I was ready to begin a new life. Where health and being in control of my body was more important than chocolate or mashed potatoes.......or even McDonalds!

Many people think fasting is not good for you and I’m sure that on some levels it is not. BUT, I truly feel the only way for me to begin new is to clear my body of all the unwanted bullshit I’ve been filling it with for the past 30 years. And I’m sure that fasting has got to be better for me than continuing down the path I was on.

For me, this is not about weight or trying to be thin. I feel pretty comfortable in my skin and think I am a very sexy woman. The thing is I don't feel healthy!

As many of you know, my entire world as I knew fell apart in December of this year, and it will not be surprising to anyone that I also got VERY sick that month. I had a very high temperature and a horrible hacking cough. It is now may and I still have that cough! I have taken antibiotics and still it remains. Also I have been dealing with a terrible case of Eczema on my right foot and left hand for about 6 months. Something I have never had a problem with in the past. And last month I began my menstrual cycle and it continued for almost 5 weeks! Till my gyno put me on the pill to make it stop. My body is crying out!! And it's time I listen.

The past year has been very hard for me emotionally and I am sure that I am carrying all the hurt and pain inside my body. What I am hoping to do is flush out all of the unwanted waste and toxins that have been building up and then after the cleanse begin a new. A clean slate. I am going to try a vegetarian diet and possibly add in some fish. I want a clean and healthy body and I am determined to get one.

I am also beginning to do yoga. I have not REALLY been moving my body in a long time. So I am taking baby steps. Yoga feels like the perfect place to start!

For those of you who do not know what the Master Cleanse is, it is a basically a fast. The only thing I will be consuming will be a mixture of water, fresh squeezed organic lemon juice, grade B maple syrup and cayenne pepper. I am planning on doing the fast for 14 days and hope that I can make it that far. Any and all support would be greatly appreciated!! Thoughts, prayers, wishes, phone calls......anything!

I have felt out of control of my life in many ways for a very long time and today I am going to start with my health. Because without it I have nothing!

Thank you to this entire community for being such a beautiful example of healthy living. You have all been my motivation and have truly helped me see a deeper side of myself.

Time to make lemons into lemonade!

I have a question for ye experienced fasters: when do you normally begin a fast?
First thing in the morning? So your last meal is the night before, or do you eat breakfast and that's your last meal? Does it make a difference?

Juice fast journal

DAY 1

So, I started my 5-day juice fast today. I have done an 8 day Master Cleanse fast about 3 months ago, and that was the first. I'm trying something mew this time, partially because my dr. scared me by saying that I should try to get some sort of protein.

I have to say that getting to have variety is great, especially when I want something that is not sweet, so I have veggie juice. However, getting the juicer out, washing the produce and juicing it, then cleaning the juicer makes it so that I don’t have all this extra time like I did with the master cleanse. The beauty of MC is the simplicity.

Anyway, today I have had (all organic and fresh juiced except the soy):
8oz mixed veggie juice (carrot, celery, broccoli, asparagus, ginger, lemon)
8oz oj
8 oz grapefruit juice w/lemon juice
6 oz veggie juice (red bell pepper, celery, carrot, red chard, garlic, scallion, spinach, lime)
8oz MC lemonade (double the citrus, 2/3 the syrup)
8 oz fruit smoothie (pineapple, mango, berres, lemon, banana, ginger)
4 oz unsweetened organic soymilk
¼ of a bottled almond vanilla soy protein shake (Odwalla).
a few glasses water

Lots of variety. I also bought some milk thistle in liquid form, and had a dose of that. It’s supposed to help with liver detox.

I read from some sources that protein will inhibit colon cleansing, but I have read elsewhere that it helps with liver detox. My doctor made me nervous, so I am intaking some protein.

I figure I’ve had around16 grams of protein today- still far below the needed 50- but more than one would get on the MC. I estimate (with help from calorie counters- I love the internet!) that I’ve taken in about 925 calories today. On the master cleanse, I averaged around 700.

I felt great in the morning, and the juice totally got rid of my morning hunger. But in the afternoon, I started to feel sick and weak (and a little hungry). I went shopping and stocked up on organic produce (which was expensive with no Farmer’s markets open today). All the goodies at whole foods were tempting, but only slightly. Then I had the grapefruit juice, which was supper yummy, but it made my tummy hurt. I took an hour nap, then I felt better. Drank some protein shake, and went for an hour and a half walk. While my head felt a little out of it, my body really liked the walk. (I walked to the beach, down the boardwalk and through a nice neighborhood on the edge of Santa Monica. Yay!) I haven’t watched tv all day, as I know that the food ads made things rough for me on the MC. Plus- I consider this a week of detox in as many ways as possible- including psychic detox.

Anyway, if anyone has thoughts, suggestions or feedback, I'd appreciate it.

FIRST TIME IN 5 YEARS PAIN FREE BECAUSE OF FASTING!

i am freaking out! like happy freaking out! i just started on this as a last resort because convetional medical practices failed me and i wanted to try EVERYTHING before i let them cut into my body and charge me rediculous amounts of cash.

anyway...we have had bad bad weather rolling through these past few days...NO HEADACHES..NO WRIST PAIN...NO KNEE PAIN>>>>>

now i am super excited because before the pain was so bad that i couldnt work.
i couldnt even exist. even on script pain meds i would hurt so badly water would come out of my eyes...just to sit there...and to use the painful joints took the breath from me. and i can handle pain. so i wasnt being a sissy. my joints would swell and get hot and red sometimes. my headaches....gave me such dark circles it looked like halloween make-up and it hurt to hear myself breathe.
now i can go look for work and start school again. LIFE BEGINS AGAIN>....YEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

and i still cant get over the fact is all it took was some clean water and not eating.
or some lemonade and not eating......if it didnt happen to me...i wouldnt believe it to be told by anyone else either.

Transitioning out of a fast -- tips, set-backs, wisdom to share?

Just one week ago, I completed a 40 day juice fast. I felt SO fantastic during the fast, and I knew the transitioning out period would be difficult, but I hadn't anticipated that being on spring break, without a set schedule, would leave me so vulnerable to "grazing" at inappropriate times. I ended up eating too much too soon, and am still paying for it with some general discomfort. On the advice of a veteran faster friend, I'm now doing a few more days on just broth, juice, and tea, to get rid of the bloat and help my body find its happy medium a bit more gently! Do any of you have any advice for how to deal with the many aspects (physical, psychological, spiritual) of feeling "let down" after a fast, and how to negotiate the transition back into real-life eating without losing one's health gains? Please share!

Any bad experiences to tell me about? I have Lupus (SLE) and heard of positive results for treating Lupus with a water fast.

I'm heading into it with three days off work to start and then I'll be back into the groove for a few days, but I'm hoping that by then I'll be well on my way and past the initial struggle (not that it stops there, I would imagine...)
Open to anything from those more experienced....

This is my first time fasting while also trying to deal with normal life (working, exercising, socializing). I hope that I don't feel too awful, but know that I have plenty to work out over the next 10 days. During past fasts I've been very 'in my head' and ultra-hypersensitive, plus headachy and fatigued (until the bliss kicks in).

Any suggestions for coping with everyday life while fasting would be appreciated :)

Starting the Dr. Jubb 14-day Lifefood Nutritional Fast with Liver/Gallbladder Flushes!

Aloha Healthy Tribesters,
I am starting the Dr. Jubb liver cleanse tomorrow. I'll be checking in periodically to update and ask for support. This is an intense one:
14 days blended and juiced Lifefood soups and drinks,
Lots of super powerful cleansing herbs for blood, inner cellular, digestion, cleansing pathways, yeast, hard core but supportive!
Castor oil packs with percussion
Coffee enemas
3 liver/gall bladder flushes.

I had a personal health consult with Dr. Jubb where he intuitively scanned me, did iridology, pressed on my fingernails, looked at my tongue, did pulse analysis, and poked me in the intestine where I'm swollen, he said. Then he asked many questions. This man has the high biological knowledge. I fee like I'm in good hands - at the end of a 5 1/2 year journey back to health. I have been battling with a nasty case of chronic hives, liver toxicity, low electrolites, and candida since August of 2000!

Please send prayers, good vibes, or whatever you do. I will totally appreciate it and need all the help I can get! I'm ready to radiate clear-channel vitality and beautiful skin!

Thank you!
Sat Nam, Nameste, Inlakesh,
Jaya

This is by far the best Fasting resource I have seen on the net so far:
http://www.freedomyou.com/level%202/Fasting%20Page%20Guide.htm

Don't let the religious slant put you off.
If you're not Christian, I would suggest that you substitute your own spiritual terminology for the Christian stuff -- as the rest of the info is very accurate and valuable, and the spiritual intentions are all good.

As with all health info though, I would recommend not relying on this exclusively. It's a good idea to round out your knowledge with several sources.

my Spring Fast log

Some of you may remember I kept a log of my last fast here:
http://vancouver.tribe.net/thread/6ecb84bc-5b04-4e9a-9881-7d25884d731b?tribeid=f4082fd9-0f7c-4de1-81ce-029258d3acc7&r=10372

I’ve just started another fast, so here’s my latest log! Feel free to chime in with comments or questions.

Pre-Fast
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
I’ve been fasting about twice a year for several years now, and I’ve settled comfortably into a method that works for me. I always do a juice fast and aim for 8 to 10 days.

The things that tend to vary is how I lead up to it, how I break it, and the level of physical activity I do.

I’ve unintentionally changed my regular diet recently to be very simple: mostly small amounts of whole grains (brown rice, millet, quinoa or buckwheat), whole grain crisp bread, and mostly raw vegetables and lightly cooked sea vegetables. For seasonings I use essential oils, tamari and sea salt.

I’ve definitely strayed from the above now and then, but that’s basically been my staple. So I feel really good about my pre-fast state right now.

This time, I want to try to continue exercising regularly. I’ve been really dedicated to a weight training schedule lately, and I’m afraid to lose momentum. Now, weight training during a fast is stupid and counter-productive, so I think I will just change the type of activity, while keeping my usual exercise schedule. I plan on taking my usual weight training time to do some yoga and light cardio or take walks instead.

I’m also exploring more supplements in the form of herbs to spur on the cleansing process. I’ve found some great tea blends at my local health food store that I will try.

I’m already trying to mentally prepare for how I break my fast. That’s always been the hardest part for me, as I tend to too quickly jump right into my regular eating routine again.

I'm a 5 ft 9inch 145lb thin vegan male. I've done water fasts in the past of no more than a day. I would like to do a longer fast or a cleanse of some kind, but I want to make sure it will work with my body type. I was thinking about the master cleanse. I'm concerned about losing too much weight. What do you think? Any recommendations?

coconut juice fast

Hi,

I'm currently fasting using coconut juice and was wondering if anyone else has fasted using just coconuts? I've been doing a combination fruit/veggie juice, coconut juice, water with blue green alage and some teas.

Does anyone know if I'll be getting enough nutrients if I start just using coconut. I've done the master cleanse and thought about mixing that in, but I'm not that fond of the lemonade.

Thanks!

Pooping Air: Five Easy Solutions

I recently went on a seven day fast, but on the third day, I began to poop lots and lots of air.

There wasn't any blood, which I would consider A MEDICAL EMERGENCY, but it is quite embarrassing to - how do you say let loose this much air when the bathroom walls at work are so thin. It's so bad they gave me a new nickname at work. Hmph!

But what to do?

Hallo!

I'm thinking of doing a 4-day fast this coming weekend, but I'm also *supposed* to have my period any time now...

Any counter-indication? I don't plan much on doing anything besides catching up on movies and reading and writing...

I think I sould be fine, but just checking with you, bunch of experts...
I never really fasted, just last August, having just one meal of salad a day for a week and drinking Green+ in orange juice... that wast great.

RAMADAN AND CONSUMERISM: A talk by DR. USAMA HASAN sponsored by the London Islamic Network for the Environment (LINE)

The London Islamic Network for the Environment (LINE) invites you to:

RAMADAN AND CONSUMERISM

Date: Sunday 11th Sept 2005
Time: 2.15 pm to 4.45pm
Venue: 4th Floor, Muslim World League, 46 Goodge Street, London, W1A
(entrance on the corner of Charlotte Street); Nearest Tube: Goodge
Street (Northern Line)

Guest Speaker: Dr Usama Hasan

According to the Koran, the purpose of the magnificent spiritual
discipline called Siyam (Fasting) has always been for individuals and
communities to attain Taqwa, which can be translated as God-
centredness. The practice of fasting is the closest thing Islam has
to monasticism; in the words of a leading Muslim intellectual, Islam
is "like a society of married monks and nuns." Ramadan offers,
amongst many other Divine blessings, the opportunity to purify
ourselves from the human weaknesses of material want, greed and
consumerism through development of the virtues of patience,
contentment, gratitude and generosity. This short talk will explore
these themes on the basis of the revealed scripture of Islam and
outline ways in which Muslims can prevent Ramadan and Eid becoming
extravagant food festivals. The intrinsic emphasis in Ramadan on
avoiding extravagance, gluttony and consumerism has obvious
resonances with ecological and environmental concerns. There will
also be time a discussion, and after the talk there will be an
opportunity to hear about LINE activities and ways of getting
involved in environmental activities.

About the speaker:

Usama Hasan holds a PhD in Artificial Intelligence and is also a
formal hafiz of the Generous Qur'an, having completed his
memorisation of the divine revelation at the age of ten. He is
currently a university lecturer in computing science and also an imam
and khatib at al-Tawhid Mosque in Leyton, east London. Recently, he
has begun making the two-mile journey from home to mosque by bicycle
rather than by car, especially for Friday Prayers, in an attempt to
put into practice the "green message" of Islam.

Spa Fasting / Cleansing

Hello All -
I am new here but really enjoying the postings. Very encouraging and supportive. I am leaving in 3 weeks to go to Samui Island in Thailand to do my second cleanse/fast this year. I am amazed at the benefits I have experienced since my cleanse and before as I spent a few months do liver clease drinks and 2/3 raw foods to prepare. It was not hard at all and I really enjoyed not having to deal with the whole food thing (shopping, cooking, cleaning, thinking, planning, "I don't know, what do you feel like having?...etc...) While I have lost a bit more than 40 pounds, I have really noticed changed in my body functioning, overall energy and attitude.

I am curious - has anyone here done any spa cleansing? If so - how was your experience? Could you recommend any place? The place that I go follows Dr. Richard Anderson's book "Cleanse Thyself." My only complaint is that while feeling full/empty is dealth with by using herbal supplements and bentonite clay and husks drinks a few times a day, I felt too full for the last three days of my 7 day fast - to the point that I didn't want any supplements and the idea of swallowing them made me panicy. Anyone else have this experience?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Ekadashi

Ekadashi is a Hindu fast before the new and full moons, so every fortnight. It means "eleven" in Sanscrit, and occurs eleven days after the full land eleven days after the new moons. I've observed it every once in a while for a couple of decades, and i think it is a very good idea. I've come to think the human digestive system, like everything else, is keyed in to moon cycles, and it is very good to reset the system, particularly before the new moon. Eating light or not at all befor the full moon helps one to channel that energy. Here is a link.

The Best Cleanse?

I've wanted to do a good detox cleanse for a good year and a half now but last time I tried, I made it literally HOURS before I had to eat real food.

I have always had trouble gaining and keeping weight on -- I'm 5'8", 125lbs -- and though I've never been tested, there's a good chance I am hypoglycemic.

I try to eat as healthy as I can, but sometimes I have to grab the junkfood quickly because my energy levels tend to plummet without much notice, making it imperitive that I eat ASAP.

I was drinking a lot of water really regularly there for a while, but I fell out of it for some time. This week, though, I've started drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water and I already feel a difference. I'm not vegetarian but I do tend to stay away from red meats and pork, I just don't like them much. I love poultry and fish and lately have been trying to eat a lot of salads, I crave them! :) I love starches! I can make a meal out of a couple baked potatos, heh.

I was sick for over a month recently, not with any one thing, but my immune system was so deficient that I would barely get over a virus and immediately have something else. Almost directly after finally kicking all that, I got both a bladder infection (which keeps sneaking back, sorta) AND a yeast infection. Incredibly annoying, yes, and a little worrisome because I'd NEVER had either before.

But because of the yeast infection I'm worried about consuming starches. I've cut a lot of sugar from my diet but I sort of crave it. As far as I understand, candida infections can make you crave sugar. So, ew.

I'd like to focus a detox (or several, if I have to) on a few areas then:
- liver (my mother had a lot of liver difficulties when she was my age)
- blood
- candida
- probably kidney
and a good skin detox too, I've been breaking out often but that could have a great deal to do with my being sick for a month

I'd appreciate any suggestions or advice any of you might have for programs. I was going to try the Master Cleanse (my bestfriend had good luck with it) but I read not too long ago that it can exacerbate some conditions. I enjoy teas and I like eating healthy, so that still leaves a lot open. I have supplements (herbal, mineral, the works) that I should be taking but because I have gotten back into a breakfast-eating routine, I keep forgetting.

Thank you all.

One-Day Detox Diet

Has anyone read and/or tried the program described by the book The Fast Track One-Day Detox Diet by Louise Gittleman (author of The Fat Flush Plan)? The basics are a seven-day whole food prep, a one-day juice fast, and a three-day reintroduction. I'm particularly interested in the ingredients of her so-called "Miracle Juice."

Hi All!

I'm starting my next juice fast on Tuesday (May 17th).
Are any of you starting a fast around that time?

I will create another Fast Log on this tribe, in case anyone is interested, or wants to chime in with supportive words. :)

You may remember, I did my last fast in November. It worked out great, EXCEPT that I broke my fast in a very wrong sort of way by pigging out on a giant gourmet meal, AND all my hard work was undone by the holiday season shortly thereafter.

May is a GREAT month for fasting and cleansing. I'm really excited to get started.

I have chronic gut problems. A 3-5 day juice fast has been an incredibly good thing to do for myself in the past. It's time. I'm ready.

However, I have a corporate 9-to-5 job. I am not sure how to deal with the intestinal loveliness and the toxic crises I know to expect from a fast while working full time in a "cozy" cube farm, showing up and sitting through meetings, and simply coping while so very very far away from the one (1) bathroom on my floor.

Anybody who's dealt with this or something similar have any advice, war stories, strategies for timing, or even funny anecdotes to share? Or should I just save it for when I can take the days off or telecommute?

Sugar causing skin problems (thinning, cracking, splitting, blisters)

When I eat sugars, the skin on my hands (palms + fingers) first manifests little blisters, then if I keep up the sugar begins to break down - thinning (fingerprints disappearing), cracking. Eventually breaks will occur, and the skin will split and peel (and bleed and hurt like crazy). From what I read online it sounds like severe eczema.

My first thoughts are candida, but I have never seen these symptoms described by candida sufferers.

Does anyone have any ideas why this would be occuring? Is it just candida? Hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia? I have suffered from this condition on and off for my entire adult life, but only recently have traced sugar down to being the main culprit.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated - I am losing my mind with this stuff! :-/

Thanks!

Going to do my first fast

OK. I've been reading up on fasting and detox and realize that my problems losing weight (I'm about 20lbs overweight at 160 and 5'6" and seemingly can't lose weight for the life of me- even running 30 miles of trail running per week along with a great diet), having serious sugar cravings and environmental allergies are probably the result of being really toxic. So, I read up on detoxing and think that the best and quickest way to do it is to go on a fast.

I make my own schedule and have lots and lots of time off if I want it (even months if I really want to), so I'm thinking of going to Harbin Hot Springs for an indefinate period.

My diet is pretty good. I do eat some meats, processed foods and refined sugar, but not in a big way. My big weakness is coffee. And into my coffee I put liberal amounts of refined sugar.

So I plan on going to Harbin and eating vegan for two to three days, then starting on replacing a couple of meals with juices only for another day or two, then going to all juices for an indefinate period. During that period I'd like to try a pure water fast for a few days if I feel like I can take it. Ideally, I would like the fast to last 3-4 weeks.

Today, I bought some mate tea to help me transition off of the coffee. I went completely off of coffee for several weeks a couple of months ago and unfortunately never got my energy back after the initial withdrawals. I continued to feel tired and had zero energy. I was drinking some green tea throughout the day and taking ginseng without any benefit. I didn't feel right until I went back on good old coffee. A chinese medicine practicioner told me that I probably have adrenal burnout. I've heard this before, but have been unable to really find any good info on adrenal burnout. Maybe the fast will give my adrenals a rest and let them have a jumpstart.

I'm VERY worried about my willpower. Food has a strong attraction to me and I've fought my weight since I first hit puberty. I figure that Harbin will have the attraction of having a lot of people around who will know what I am going through and be able to give me some support, along with pure water, pure air, yoga twice daily, a big library, the sauna and the hot springs to help with detoxing. The only store for several miles is almost completely organic. I can empty out my fridge and cupboards of any foods that I don't want to eat ( I'll be in my RV). But the store STILL has chocolates, coffee, cookies, etc and I'm afraid that I'll break down.

I don't know anything about the master cleanse and really don't want to buy ANOTHER book on fasting ( I have one that seems good). And from what y'all are saying, it doesn't sound like it does much but tell you the incredients in a three to four ingredient drink that you should take during your fast.

Any advice, thoughts, etc would be appreciated.

fasting after surgery

Hi all!
I plan to do the master cleanse and I really want to do it right after I get out of surgery next week (I am have kneww surgery.) I have to be pretty sedentary for the first week after the surgery and I thought this would be a good time to do the master cleanse. But I am wondering if maybe doing it after surgery is not a good idea because my body will be healing.

Advice?
Thanks!

I've been wanting to do a fast for a while and I was going to start next week but now I have this new job doing massage and I just can't afford to be that low energy.

Can anyone recommend a good cleansing type diet that's good as a suppliment for fasting when you need to keep your calories in tact?

how to: water fast?

i already posted this on curezone.com. but i am asking here as well:
_____________________________________________________
hi!
new here. i was going to start a cleansing program with the good old fashion master cleanse.
but i am totally broke...so i am gaining interest in information on water fasting.
i would like to feel cleaned out
lose weight
my activity level is sedentary
i am changing my diet from junk food to healthier food
usually a once a day eater with a snack
i do drink caffine (amt fluxes)
i dont smoke
i am 5'5'' @145-150 lbs (am told i look more like 130. whatever that means...more lean muscle?)

any links to free info on what to do to make sure that i dont make myself ill and keep properly hydrated.
i dont have to work or care for anyone so low energy wont be a factor that trips me up. i know i am going to feel not so hot.
i did a plain water flush and got all sore throated so i am guessing i am pretty toxic.

so:
1. how much water should i drink?(i know from the tap is a no no)
2. would taking cayenne pepper help with the plain water flush?
3. should i take a herbal laxitive tea and when? (i have 100% senna here)
4. what is a reasonable time to be on this fast?

Hi. I wonder if anyone has an opinion on this. I tried the salt water and it was very harsh I think coffee works better. So the question is - what do you think of using coffee while cleansing or right after? Do you think it could be any more unhealthy than salt water for the body? It certainly tastes better :)

In some of the threads, i read mention of herbal teas being used as laxatives. I was wondering if they contained senna..or does anyone have positive or negative things to say about using senna for that purpose...The stuff does certainly seen to clear one out.

my fasting log

I thought the logs that others have posted were great, and very informative! I hope you guys don't mind that I post mine here too.

So here we go:

-----------------------------------

Pre-Fast
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Before beginning this fast, I was feeling great. I've been healthy and doing regular exercise. My weight lifting regime has been going well, although I really want better definition. I'm happy with my "weight" but I am aiming for a leaner look. The goal of this fast leans closer to fitness goals this time around than to detoxing or mental/spritiual clarity (though gratefully, those are some unavoidable side benefits).

I ate normally up to the day before the fast. For me, "normal" is very healthy. I eat a lot of whole grains and fresh fruit and veggies, beans and organic tofu. I do like sweets, but I didn't have any processed or sugary food or snacks for several days leading up to this fast. I also didn't lower the volume of food I normally eat. I simply stopped my normal eating routine on Sunday night, and began juice fasting on Monday.

hello & intro

Hi all,

I'm just starting a fast and thought I'd join this tribe for some inspiration! :)

I've been fasting about twice a year for the last 8 years or so.

I don't believe in any of the trendy "methods" that are being marketed out there. My method comes from a variety of sources, after trying to learn as much as I can about different approaches and about nutrition. I'm always improving my method as I learn more.

I juice fast. Always freshly-made by me, and always a wide variety of fruit and veggies. I supplement with psyllium and EFA oils, and drink as much water and herbal teas as I want.

My goals are a combination of 1) detoxifying, 2) spiritual/mental cleanse, and 3) fitness goals.

I usually aim for 10-14 days, but this past year I've been weight training regularly, so I only do 8-10 days so that I don't lose too much of the muscle I've worked so hard for.

Over the years I've tried finding online fasting resources, and it has only been over the last year that I have found *anything* -- so we should definitely take advantage of this Tribe to learn from each other, as it is not a very well documented topic, and there is a lot of questionable and even dangerous information out there.

Looking forward to chatting more with you guys about this!

My whole band is planning to more or less go on the master cleanse together..for support...Now that I am just about to go off solid foods, I find that it is getting to be that time o' the month. Will it be okay for me to continue fasting?

This is an awesome article, outlining the cause of a lot of health distress in the world today. Exposes a lot of myths and non-truths that most people accept. He really breaks it down!
Allergy medicine will cure allergies

All the above statements are myths. Fortunes have been spent to slam and re-slam them into the public's hard disk. Each can easily be proven false with just a little research, provided the student is determined to go wherever the data may lead. (The Doors of Perception - thedoctorwithin.com)

In this chapter we will only look at the last of these carefully crafted bits of conventional wisdom.

WHAT ARE ALLERGIES?

Your friend looks at your bloodshot eyes, hears your stuffed-up voice, and accepts the explanation "It's my allergies," as though the symptoms he observes were the disease itself. This word game is no accident. We are conditioned by a thousand commercials a day to equate all diseases with their symptoms. Headache, backache, arthritis, tinnitus, high blood pressure, on and on - are not diseases themselves, but rather the signs of disease. The illusion is that by covering up the signs, we have now cured the disease. The illusion is that by naming the signs, we have identified the disease. Nothing could be further from the truth.

You have a headache. Solution, programmed every five minutes on TV: Tylenol, Advil, whatever, that will do what? That's right: take the pain away. But wait ? the pain wasn't the cause of the problem. The headache had a reason; it was a sign of something else. Neck spasm, intoxication, emotional stress, sinus allergies, trauma, spine misalignment, drugs, chemical sensitivity, overwork, hunger ? the pain can come from many sources. The pill didn't solve anything, didn't cure anything. Soon as it wears off, guess what? Right ? the pain returns. So then what are we taught to do? Right ? more pills.

Same with allergies. Allergies are not watery eyes and stuffed up noses. Allergies are reactions to irritants. Something foreign is triggering the body's cleansing responses. Like walking behind a smoky bus when it starts up. You breathe in the fumes and start coughing and choking, with your eyes watering. That's an allergic response. Humans are allergic to bus exhaust. Eyes water to clear the eyes. Coughing reflex kicks in to forcibly expel the toxic fumes before they get inhaled. Happens in an instant.

Tolerance is a big problem. That means when we get used to an irritant, the body gives up on trying to expel it. Like a bus mechanic. After a few weeks or months of breathing those fumes every day, the body doesn't try so hard. The sensitive mucous membranes in the mouth and nose toughen up a little, and the mechanic learns to "take it." He's becoming less sensitized to a poison ? carbon monoxide. Doesn't mean it won't kill him; it just means the body's getting accustomed to that degree of being poisoned. The irritant is no longer triggering such a strong cleansing response as it used to.

Same with someone learning to smoke cigarettes. He coughs and chokes at first, but soon gets the hang of it. The body's ability to throw off the toxins is gradually weakened.

We've all heard of anti-histamines. Pills and sprays that unclog stuffed noses. They work by blocking histamines. Histamines are produced by our white cells to trigger protective mechanisms, like stuffing up the nose, making the eyes water, and shutting down digestion. Allergy medicine is generally an antihistamine, which unnaturally interferes with the body's normal attempts to protect itself. Mouth, nose, and eyes ? that's the first line of defense. When antihistamines block these normal clearing responses from happening, the irritant or allergen or antigen is being permitted to enter further into the body than it would normally have gotten. This is a side effect of antihistamines. You may thank God that you can breathe again, but for any drug, there is always a downside. The problem wasn't the stuffy nose or the watering eyes; the problem was the allergen: the irritant. Antihistamines don't touch the underlying cause; they just suspend the body's ability to respond with its normal clearing mechanisms. Result: tolerance. Toxification.

Isn't this obvious? Holistic doctors grow weary of explaining this self-evident fact over and over a dozen times a day to their patients. It's like if you're driving down the road and suddenly you hear this horrendous knocking noise coming from the engine. So you turn up the radio full blast in order to cover up the noise. Pretty stupid, but that's precisely what we're doing with allergy medication.

COVER UP THE SYMPTOMS

The focus of allergy treatment should be to eliminate the underlying stimulus of the sinus blockage and the watery nose and eyes. First of all, identify the causative factor. Cat hair, dust, pollen, shellfish, wool, etc.? I don't think so. Normal people can be around all of these and not react. Genetics? The usual excuse, when the "experts" run out of ideas. We have no idea, so let's just transfer it to an area that so far is unprovable and unknowable ? gene sequencing. That way we can avoid pronouncing those three frightful words that separate the career researcher from the true scientist: "I don't know." As long as we don't know, the best we can do is keep on buying and selling antihistamines and their derivatives. As a $10 billion a year industry, why would anyone want to question it? Doctors sell drugs; that's why we go to them. If you want health, well, that's a different topic altogether. You're on your own for that.

There's another possibility here, another solution that thousands of people have discovered within the past five years. A whole new paradigm must be considered to explain the consistent success all these patients are having in resolving their chronic allergies. This point of view may be called the Threshold of Reactivity. It's really quite simple.

Here's the key idea: what do 99% of allergic Americans have in common? Undigested food. Too simple? Simplicity is the hallmark of the classic solution. Undigested food accumulates in the digestive tract, in the blood, in the tissues, organs and joints. It remains for months and years and cannot be dislodged by any of the body's methods. And the last and most persistent of these methods is the Inflammatory Response ? the body's attempt to what? Right: attack and expel the intruder.

Chronic buildup of undigested food signals two main deficiencies within the body: enzymes and flora.

First,

ENZYMES

The reader is directed to the chapter on enzymes ENZYMES for review. To summarize, enzymes are what has been removed from food in order to make it last as long as possible on the shelves of American supermarkets. Enzymes are necessary for breakdown and digestion of food. Without them, the body makes a valiant effort to employ its own digestive enzymes to do the job. Problem is, so many of the soft foods we eat today are brand new to the human species within the past 75 years. New chemicals and preservatives have been introduced into our food supply for flavoring and preserving. The rancid, oxidizing fats of chips and fries are too weird. Our bodies can't break them down. After a certain amount of trying, the body gives up. At that point, much goes in, but little goes out. That's the main reason older people have difficulty eliminating. And many young people as well.

Food allergists and clinical ecologists waste a great deal of time setting up elimination diets to find out which exact foods cause a patient's allergic symptoms. Far more applicable and effective would be a shotgun approach: enzyme supplementation, because in general we eat an enzyme-less processed diet. People don't eat corn and bananas and cashews nearly as much as they eat processed peanut butter, Hamburger Helper, Taco Supremes, Big Macs, pizza, fries, Cheetos, chocolate pudding, hot dogs, Fig Newtons, and potato chips. The American soft drink industry is at $54 billion per year. (Wall Street Journal 18 Sep 98) 57 gallons per year per American. (Appleton)

Pasteurized milk has no enzymes any more. Canned food, none. Dairy products, salad dressings, soft drinks, ice cream, cheese, pastries, deep fried food, salty snacks, - see where this is going? ? contain no enzymes. So what, you ask? So John Wayne and Elvis. Huh? On autopsy, according to the county coroner's reports, these gentlemen had 44 and 20 lbs. of undigested food in their respective colons at the time of death. According to the FDA, the average American has between 4 and 22 lbs. of undigested food in the colon at any given time. Rotting food in the digestive tract sets up a condition that gastroenterologists call Leaky Gut Syndrome. Review the colon chapter THE COLON

Happens like this:

Putrefying sludge breaks down the cells of the gut lining (epithelium) largely by choking off the blood supply to these delicate cells (ischemia). The gut wall is supposed to be very selective in what it allows to be absorbed into the blood. Hyperpermeability takes place when there is so much cell damage that the intestinal cells can no longer be selective. Stuff that wasn't supposed to get through starts getting through. Big stuff. Large molecules of half-digested fat, protein, and carbohydrate are absorbed intact through the gut into the bloodstream. Once in the blood, these foreign molecules can lodge in any joint, tissue, or organ. Since they are rotting food, they are toxins. As such, they can be the cause of practically ANY disease condition you can name. We're talking blood poisoning here: toxemia, bacteremia, septicemia. Don't be put off by big words. Such a set-up is perfect as the explanation for an allergic reaction. We're allergic, all right ? allergic to all the food we're taking in and never digesting.

Second,

FLORA

Flora means good bacteria. The normal colon should have three lbs. of good bacteria at all times. (Shahani) They are also called probiotics, and include species like Lactobacillus, L. Salivarius, Acidophilus, and many others. Their job is the final phase of digestion. Without them, food rots in the colon. Rotting food becomes cemented within the inner folds of the colon's lining, destroying the mucosal cells, preventing normal function, and eventually blocking proper elimination. Rotting food leaks back into the bloodstream, going anywhere it can in the body.

World authority in probiotics, the late Dr. Khem Shahani, described flora as the Second Immune System. He was referring to the ability of the flora to remove a toxic stimulus or allergen ? undigested food - from the body. Understanding this simple concept is the key to grasping the essential dynamic between a healthy colon and the end of allergies. With rare exception, allergies simply cannot coexist in a body that has a healthy colon.

Why do most Americans have suppressed flora? That's easy. Probiotic flora - the good bacteria - are fragile life forms existing in the normal body in a dynamic balance along with pathological (bad) bacteria, fungi, and viral forms. These good bacteria get killed off by the following agents

antibiotics we take
antibiotics in the meat we eat
antacids, like Zantac, Tagamet, etc.
NSAIDs, like Advil, Tylenol, Excedrin, Motrin, etc.
other prescription and over the counter medications-
white sugar
carbonated drinks
antihistamines (!)
chlorinated drinking water
fluoridated water

Many holistic nutritionists estimate that 80% of American women, and a significant proportion of men, have systemic Candida albicans. Candida is a yeast proliferation throughout the whole body whose existence was denied by American medical doctors as recently as fifteen years ago. As the normal flora become killed off, bad bacteria begin to multiply. Without enough good bacteria to occupy the available living quarters, there is nothing to check the bad ones. Fungal and yeast growths are allowed to increase for the same reason. Doctors call this phenomenon opportunistic infection. With the amount of pasteurized dairy we consume, such chronic low-grade infections are in epidemic proportions in America today.

The normal person has some viruses, some Candida, some potentially pathogenic bacteria at all times. But the majority of bacteria in the normal body are good ones. Think of it like walking into a crowded theatre. If all the seats are taken, there's no place to sit. Same for the pathogenics. If all the seats are taken by the friendly bacteria, the opportunists don't get the opportunity to replicate because there's no place to sit. Is this rocket science?

AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES

Thirty years ago you couldn't use the word autoimmune in conversation unless you were speaking with a doctor. With the meteoric increase in these diseases, today even the uneducated know what you're talking about, because someone in their family probably has an autoimmune condition.

Autoimmune means the body is attacking itself. It means that for some reason, the body is getting the idea that part of itself is foreign and must be expelled, in exactly the same way as any allergen, intruder or antigen would be. First that means inflammation. Then comes swelling, followed by the onset of fibrosis (crunchiness, from the laying down of cheap tissue), and finally, if unchecked, actual calcification. Pain can jump in at any time. It's almost biblical, like the body is turning to stone because we have not honored its needs. Almost.

Lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, scleroderma, - we hear about most of these all the time. What do they have in common? They're all of "unknown" origin, according to the medical texts. They can't be cured by drugs. They're all progressive. They can all be life-threatening. They're autoimmune. And they're all on the rise.

I won't be making revelatory statements here by saying what hundreds of holistic healers have known for years: the cause of these diseases is obvious, and they are all expressions of the same process - toxemia. (Tilden) That means blood poisoning. Another term is autointoxication, or self-poisoning. It's simply that food has putrified in the digestive tract for months or longer, which then leaks through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream in its undigested, rotting form. The debris is then free to lodge in any location it can find, where the inflammatory process will promptly begin. Easy to see why: in the blood, there are no digestive enzymes any more. Those were left behind in the digestive system.

Remember, that was Nature's brilliant survival design: the inside of the Tube is still the outside of the body. (The Tube is the entire digestive tract, from one end to the other.) Digestion of food only takes place within the Tube, outside the body. So with no enzymes in the blood, the undigested food which doesn't belong there anyway can no longer be broken down. All the blood can hope to do is to attack the foreign stuff with white cells to wall it off, or to engulf it in fat cells or calcium.

Problem is, the inflow of this stuff never ends. With the American high fat processed diet, more debris gets past the intestinal walls every day in undigested forms that were never meant to get into the blood - Leaky Gut Syndrome. Day after day, week after week, the stuff accumulates in the joints, arteries, and tissues, infiltrating wherever it can. After awhile the body can no longer distinguish between the undigested food particles and the tissues in which they are lodged. It sends its army - the immune system - to attack the foreign area, no longer just the foreign cells. So whatever the organ, whatever the tissue where the rotting food accumulates - that part of the body will be attacked as foreign. And we'll call it an autoimmune response. It's really not mysterious at all. It's completely natural. These empty, nutrition-deficient manmade foods of commerce simply don't belong inside the body. They were never food at all; they were just packaged and sold to look like food. And that, my friends, is show business.

OTHER ALLERGENS

All the foregoing has to do with undigested processed foods as the cause of allergic reactions. This doesn't even take into account the pesticides, hormones, and chemical preservatives, additives, and contaminants which end up in our food as the results of preparation, processing and packaging. Half of all antibiotics produced in the US today are for animals. Animals we eat. Sprayed pesticides work their way into the inner cells of supermarket fruit, and do not wash off. In our bodies such poisons are fat-soluble: stored in our fat cells, for months or years. Until the mid 1980s, sulfur dioxide compounds known as sulfites were commonly sprayed on French fries, meat, and salad bars to keep the food from browning too quickly. Sulfites were also routinely added to wine, to prevent further fermentation. Sulfur dioxide is toxic, and a cause of thousand of documented allergic reactions reported to the FDA in the mid 1980s, many of them fatal. Although sulfite use on meat and raw produce has been banned, they still appear in bronchodilator sprays, and also in wines, as long as the label states the percentage. (Randolph, p83)

Ever notice how some bananas don't ripen, but just go from green to rotten, with large black areas as though they had been bruised? This is from "gas-ripened" bananas. After shipping, the green bananas are put into a room and sprayed with ethylene gas, which artificially ripens them just before going to the market. Here's how you tell the difference: naturally ripening bananas will have many small dark spots on the skin as they ripen, and won't turn immediately rotten. Gassing is legal at this time, but is usually the cause of allergic response in someone who thinks he's allergic to bananas. (Randolph)

THE LAST STRAW

OK, back to the Threshold of Reactivity. You know the background now. So here it is: since all this undigested food has no outlet or way to be broken down, it builds up within the body over months and years. Let's call the point at which a person actually breaks out with symptoms of allergy (hives, rash, runny nose, stuffed sinuses, etc) let's call that point the Threshold. Below the Threshold, the person won't have symptoms. Stay with me now for the punchline. Since the indulgent American is packing away all this stored debris, he is pushing his body steadily closer and closer to its toxic capacity. Day by day he is jacking up his level of autointoxication, higher and higher. He is so close to the Threshold at all times, because of his indigestible diet, that contact with cat hair, dust, pollen, phases of the moon, or whatever the Specialist said he was "allergic to" ? any contact is enough to raise him that last little bit, the straw that broke the camel's back, above the Threshold, and voila' - symptoms occur. And then the "specialist" blames the whole allergy on that last straw.

So they give him antihistamine "allergy medication" which prevents the body from offering its normal response to chronic poisoning from all the undigested, weird foods it's still taking in. And as soon as the medication wears off, he keeps breaking out. This is why allergy medication never cures allergies. People who take allergy medication continue to "have allergies" year after year. Most of them actually develop further allergy to the medication itself.

Same with allergy shots. They give you a little of what you're supposedly allergic to, as determined by the Last Straw diagnosis, with the promise that this will make you "immune" to that last straw ? the cat hair, pollen, fairy dust, eye of newt, whatever. Allergy shots rarely work. If they did you wouldn't have to rush back to the doctor every six months or so for your shots. Ever notice how people on allergy shots always have allergies? Ever hear of anyone getting cured by allergy shots?

How can it be this simple? Why doesn't everybody know this? Thousands do, but the reason this information is not mainstream starts with an M. The allergy industry is big business, both presription and over-the-counter. Changing one's diet is not. It goes back to the first paragraph about conventional wisdom.

LAYER THAT STUCCO

One difficulty with food allergies is that they are bio-accumulative. In addition to the digestive tract, undigested residue is stored in fat cells and may last for months or years. A sensitivity may persist for weeks or more after new intake has stopped. In the case of dairy, it is only necessary to take in a tiny amount of any processed milk or cheese product every few days in order to keep a dairy allergy going, to maintain the person's susceptibility to the allergen: the coughing and the sneezing, etc. Even a few drops of milk added to coffee is sufficient to support the chronic allergy. And the person may think that he has "stopped" eating dairy. (Twogood)

The same is true of additives in the food and in the food's packaging, and also of the contaminants that may be present. Theron Randolph, MD, clinical ecologist, talks about the material used in the lining of tin cans which is used to keep the color of the metal can off the food. The material is called phenol, a coal-tar derivative. It is used in virtually all canned foods. Dr. Randolph has documented hundreds of cases of reactions to the phenol alone. (An Alternative Approach to Allergies)

For years Albuquerque, New Mexico has been a mecca for asthmatics, TB patients, and those trying to escape their "allergies." No more. Talk to any doctor in Albuquerque today and you'll hear the same story: practically everyone in town has allergies. And the government actually has researchers out there climbing "trees" to find out what kind of pollen is making people sick! It's a desert! The people aren't sick from dust, angel hair, or cactus pollen. They're sick, and allergic, from the homogenized, devitalized processed food of the metropolitan American city, a diet which is unvaryingly standardized, from Coney Island all the way to the Santa Monica Pier. Allergy in America today occurs in epidemic proportions. Many researchers are like Howard Rapaport, author of The Complete Allergy Guide, in that they estimate that half the population suffers from some form of allergy. And that book was written in 1970.

A FAIR TRIAL

Let's say your programming does not allow you to believe anything I've said up to this point, and for various reasons it simply makes no sense to you as far as your allergies go. Fine. Ask yourself this: do I really want to get rid of these allergies, or am I going to continue taking these medications every year, with very little results? If you can admit to yourself that you're really sick of your allergies and would like to try an experiment that does not depend on drugs, try the 60 Day Test. For the next 60 days,
no drugs
no dairy
no white sugar or white flour
colon cleanse
New West Diet

Lest this sound too easy, by drugs, I mean no medications of any kind, prescription or over the counter, unless you're on some life-sustaining drug therapy program.

No dairy means no milk, no cheese, no butter, no alfredo sauce, no yoghurt, no ice cream, no white salad dressing for 60 days.

No white sugar means no soft drinks, no donuts, no cookies, no refined flour, no ice cream for 60 days.

A program of enzymes and flora will intensify the detox process, and maintain the new allergen-free status, once it's acquired. (1 800 572 6204)

The 60 Day Test may not be fun, but how do you like your allergies? The per cent success rate of such a program is in the 90s. If the 60 Day Test doesn't work, then individual contaminants may have to be ruled out one by one. But this program is workable and generally applicable, with no side effects, except for its inconvenience. Thousands have done it. The reason it's not millions is simple: this program requires taking a step in the dangerous direction known as I Can Be Responsible For My Own Health. Such a journey is discouraged by any and every public medium possible ? written and spoken, online and digital, conscious and unconscious ? that is under the control of the nation's two biggest advertisers: food manufacturers and drug manufacturers.

DRIVE-THRU CLUE

Here's my personal definition of pathological cluelessness. Your child has had "allergies" most of his life, and is on bronchodilators or antihistamines in spray or pill form. No progress is noted. Blind trust has suppressed any wonder you may have had about possible side effects of taking these drugs on a daily basis for all these years. You've never even considered looking up the Adverse Reactions to the drugs in the Physicians Desk Reference, available at any library or WalMart or Costco these days. But that's not even the bad part. The bad part is where you go to the drive-thru at Wendy's and let your kid order a giant Frosty, fries, and a Coke because you're both too hungry to wait until you can get home to get at the milk, ice cream, Pepsi, and cheese that awaits you in superabundance in your very own fridge. And you talk about your child's allergies with your friends with the same conversational tone you use to describe the brake job your car just got at Midas. Yes, he has allergies, BUT he takes the inhalator and the antihistamines, so he's OK, you know. Anybody but me see anything insane about this little bit of prosaic Americana?

OK, sorry. How would you have known? Well now you know. The vast majority of allergies today are food allergies. We're addicted to the things that poison us. Of course there can be other causes, other irritants which effect allergic response: environmental toxins, chemicals in housing materials, cleaning materials, cosmetics, clothing, bedding, heating and air conditioning, But why search the house high and low for some elusive unknown bug, when there's an elephant sitting right in the middle of the living room?
