I know this post is old, but anyone reading should be aware that at all times, and especially when cleansing, you must move your bowels regularly! Otherwise, toxins aren't leaving your body. Since your digestion is slowed down during a fast, it is neccesary to use enemas, purgatives(like salt water), or added fiber to be sure you are freely flowing. And water is SO important! Half your body weight in ounces, like someone else said, is a good guideline for normal times, and even more should be taken while fasting to assist in flushing of toxins. If your urine is not clear, drink more water! Also, sweating, dry brushing, and any hydrotherapy are great for getting those toxins out quickly and safely. Always come off a fast slowly, adding solid fruits and vegies, and adding a little more foods every day until you are back to a healthy diet. Not everyone can handle a water fast. Most people are too toxic to do this intense of a detox. If you are not eating a very pure diet at all times, simply eating less food, and clean foods only is a good enough cleanse for most people in this society. The next level could be eating only vegetables for a day or so, and then resuming a very healthy diet. A juice fast is good for people who have been eating well for a long time, and water fasting should be only for those who are already quite clean, and have free flowing detox pathways. Don't forget to support your liver! Happy cleansing, and Happy Spring!

Hello all, I just did a water fast for three days! It was mostly a trail run to see how my body handled it and to have regular bowl movements. On the first day I had a bowl movement and then none until I ate again. I have been having more movements on a regular basis! But it seems I can't adjust to any of the food I eat now. Everything seems to upset my stomach the more regularly I try to eat. I'm running to the bathroom with diarria! I don't think this is normal. The first meal I had was a salad which didn't site well. So then I felt cooked food would sit better. Not quite so though. also on the first day of eating I had a cake (which I was craving sweets like no other) and that sat real well in my stomach! It seems like the sugar is what my body needed. It has been a week though and food still just doesn't sit well. Any ideas or suggestions as to a better diet after just water fast?

I'm on day seven of a ten day water fast - although I have had a few spoons full of plain yoghurt each day - does that still count as a water fast? I have previously water fasted for 5 days and once had a close to water fast for about 30 days...at the end of which I was either hallucinating or seeing visions. This time I was much more intentional - praying about the purpose and anticipating the starting date for some time.... it's been much easier than the 5 day fast, actually.

one thing I've noticed is that I've been waking up very early - 5 - 6 am and I've been alert and ready to start the day.... I also notice that early or mid afternoon I feel like a nap. I have been carrying out most of my usual activities (working, meetings in the evening, etc) but have stopped swimming (i usually swim 2 kms per day and think that might be a bit silly right now!).

I've been drinking the lemon juice/maple syrup/cayenne pepper water mix and a few mornings I've had 2 tablespoons of sea salt in a litre of water (strong!). I am a vegetarian nonsmoker, irregular low-level alcohol drinker so I suspect it would be tougher (but more beneficial?) for smoking, drinking carnivores to do a water fast. In case you think I sound too much like a space cadet, let me confess that my last meal turned out to be pizza! ha! NOT the best way to start a 10 day water fast, but I was with friends and didn't want to make waves about what we ate... (they didn't know it was my last pre-fast meal)

anyway, be encouraged people.... ;) Steve

I just did a one-day water fast yesterday. It was my first time fasting and I don't think I could have done more than one day. I woke up this morning feeling very weak, a bit dizzy and lethargic. I did have some minor aching joints as well. I feel great now that I've had a bit of fruit and herbal tea.
I'm very glad I did it, especially from a spiritual perspective. I have just made some significant life changes and this was a good opportunity for me to retreat from the world and reconnect with myself. the fast has really increased my body awareness and given me a strong desire to only eat healthy foods now. I am also much more appreciative of the incredible bounty of food available to me every day.

one question... how much water do you drink during a water fast? I had about 1.5L of purified water over the course of the day but I'm thinking maybe I should have had a bit more? maybe I wouldn't have felt so weak this morning..?

each time i've done this fastingform, i was concurrently on a solo in a natural space, completely disconnected from anthropocentric cultural norms/expectations. the second day has been my weakest, the first i've done stretching, yoga, dancing, meditation chanting etc. the second i've found meditation to arrive more easily, my physical body weaker but my connection to universal exisdance & wisdom more swooshingly wide open...this second day i also have yoga'd and chanted, etc, but MUCH more gently...
the third the connection is also intense, but the weakness has subsided a bit, or maybe the conditions of no food have just come into a finer balance inside my body,
there was also awareness that this was the day before food would come again, i think that helped in feeling physically stronger,

each of these fast~solos (i've done two, one hugely more intentional than the other) was an immense transformational journey during which i learned very significant lessons, i'm not sure if this is the quality of fasting experience you're seeking, but at least you will know from my words that there is rich potential for awakening in this context, if you'd like to know any more details, i'm happy to share more, just bee in touch & ask questions...
