Going to do my first fast

OK. I've been reading up on fasting and detox and realize that my problems losing weight (I'm about 20lbs overweight at 160 and 5'6" and seemingly can't lose weight for the life of me- even running 30 miles of trail running per week along with a great diet), having serious sugar cravings and environmental allergies are probably the result of being really toxic. So, I read up on detoxing and think that the best and quickest way to do it is to go on a fast.

I make my own schedule and have lots and lots of time off if I want it (even months if I really want to), so I'm thinking of going to Harbin Hot Springs for an indefinate period.

My diet is pretty good. I do eat some meats, processed foods and refined sugar, but not in a big way. My big weakness is coffee. And into my coffee I put liberal amounts of refined sugar.

So I plan on going to Harbin and eating vegan for two to three days, then starting on replacing a couple of meals with juices only for another day or two, then going to all juices for an indefinate period. During that period I'd like to try a pure water fast for a few days if I feel like I can take it. Ideally, I would like the fast to last 3-4 weeks.

Today, I bought some mate tea to help me transition off of the coffee. I went completely off of coffee for several weeks a couple of months ago and unfortunately never got my energy back after the initial withdrawals. I continued to feel tired and had zero energy. I was drinking some green tea throughout the day and taking ginseng without any benefit. I didn't feel right until I went back on good old coffee. A chinese medicine practicioner told me that I probably have adrenal burnout. I've heard this before, but have been unable to really find any good info on adrenal burnout. Maybe the fast will give my adrenals a rest and let them have a jumpstart.

I'm VERY worried about my willpower. Food has a strong attraction to me and I've fought my weight since I first hit puberty. I figure that Harbin will have the attraction of having a lot of people around who will know what I am going through and be able to give me some support, along with pure water, pure air, yoga twice daily, a big library, the sauna and the hot springs to help with detoxing. The only store for several miles is almost completely organic. I can empty out my fridge and cupboards of any foods that I don't want to eat ( I'll be in my RV). But the store STILL has chocolates, coffee, cookies, etc and I'm afraid that I'll break down.

I don't know anything about the master cleanse and really don't want to buy ANOTHER book on fasting ( I have one that seems good). And from what y'all are saying, it doesn't sound like it does much but tell you the incredients in a three to four ingredient drink that you should take during your fast.

Any advice, thoughts, etc would be appreciated.

Something that helps me get off White Refined Sugar...eliminates the cravings, too.

It's called Nature's Plus Ultra Sugar Control

      www.betterlife.com/prod_home_page.asp

Here's the cheapest price I could find. You take one when you're craving...then eat like a green apple, or something with natural sugar in it... Pretty soon, your cravings will disappear...but if you're a real sugar addict like me, one teaspoon of sugar and you'll be craving like crazy for more and more again...so I keep a few handy, and watch ingredients, and make it a point not to do even a little...or I'll be binging in no time flat.

Good reading to accompany this method, "Lick the Sugar Habit"

Also, you could try Stevia instead of sugar in your coffee and tea. It's alkalizing and not addictive.

Good luck...I'm envious you can take a lot of time off, it sounds like a fantastic journey :)

OK. So I'm actually doing it. I'm at Harbin and I'm on Day 6 of my indefinate fast. I ate vegetarian for a couple of days beforehand, then showed up at Harbin and decided to just go all out and do it. I'm not very good at moderation so I just went for it.

Day 1: I tried doing the MC and managed to actually do it for the first day, but the cayenne seems to really upset my stomach (and NOTHING EVER really seems to upset my stomach and all of that maple syrup made me feel sick. Also, intellectually I'm thinking should I REALLY have all that sugar when I'm trying to beat a sugar addiction? Didn't make sense, so I decided to modify it to my needs.

Woke up with energy and went to yoga, but crashed after yoga and slept for about 3 hours. I'm still coming off of caffeine so that's probably it. I'm not worried about it. I'd rather sleep through my fast anyway if that were possible!! Gave myself an enema. It really wasn't that bad. Soaked in the baths and spent a lot of time in the sauna to sweat out everything.

Day 2: Mostly drank water with 1 tablespoon of maple syrup and 2 Tbs of lemon. Juiced twice today and had several mint teas. Sweated in the sauna and did yoga once. Went to bed early.

Day 3: Slept about 12 hours. Felt good in the morning. Did another enema. Used the neti pot to clean my nasal passages. I weighed in at 158 lbs today. Drank a Kombucha tea from the market, did yoga, juiced once, sweated some more. It was a good day.

Day 4: Drinking mostly water with lemon, teas, Kombucha tea. I didn't juice at all today. Had some vegetable broth. Did yoga, sweated. Pretty good day. I'm still hungry and "they" say that you're only supposed to be hungry for 3 days. Weighed 152 today. Wow!

Day 5: Not a good day today. My mouth tasted metallic all day. I quit yoga half way through due to the "yuckies". I didn't soak because it didn't feel right. Still drank mostly water and teas. No juice today. I got a massage and he concentrated on clearing my lymph areas. I felt much better afterward, but I'm still hungry all the time. The worst today. I just had the yucks all day.

Day 6: Today. I'm feeling OK. Soaked and sweated for a while. Wow, my body really just pours out sweat now that I've been in the sauna everyday. I don't sweat very much, but in the sauna- boy I'm really drenched. I weighed in at 152 AGAIN!! What the hell. 2 days with no food and I weigh the same! Juiced once today. I'm still really hungry all of the time! Damn.

I'm planning on staying here until I'm detoxed or can't stand it anymore. Surprisingly, its been easier to fast than it is to be moderate and just eat right. Having to say no to EVERYTHING is easier than saying no to dessert for some reason. It doesn't really seem like I'm getting anything out of this though and I'm getting frustrated. I just feel like I normally do every day when I'm eating (except now I'm hungry all of the time!!). I'll keep y'all updated when I can get to the internet.
