Juice fast journal

DAY 1

So, I started my 5-day juice fast today. I have done an 8 day Master Cleanse fast about 3 months ago, and that was the first. I'm trying something mew this time, partially because my dr. scared me by saying that I should try to get some sort of protein.

I have to say that getting to have variety is great, especially when I want something that is not sweet, so I have veggie juice. However, getting the juicer out, washing the produce and juicing it, then cleaning the juicer makes it so that I don’t have all this extra time like I did with the master cleanse. The beauty of MC is the simplicity.

Anyway, today I have had (all organic and fresh juiced except the soy):
8oz mixed veggie juice (carrot, celery, broccoli, asparagus, ginger, lemon)
8oz oj
8 oz grapefruit juice w/lemon juice
6 oz veggie juice (red bell pepper, celery, carrot, red chard, garlic, scallion, spinach, lime)
8oz MC lemonade (double the citrus, 2/3 the syrup)
8 oz fruit smoothie (pineapple, mango, berres, lemon, banana, ginger)
4 oz unsweetened organic soymilk
¼ of a bottled almond vanilla soy protein shake (Odwalla).
a few glasses water

Lots of variety. I also bought some milk thistle in liquid form, and had a dose of that. It’s supposed to help with liver detox.

I read from some sources that protein will inhibit colon cleansing, but I have read elsewhere that it helps with liver detox. My doctor made me nervous, so I am intaking some protein.

I figure I’ve had around16 grams of protein today- still far below the needed 50- but more than one would get on the MC. I estimate (with help from calorie counters- I love the internet!) that I’ve taken in about 925 calories today. On the master cleanse, I averaged around 700.

I felt great in the morning, and the juice totally got rid of my morning hunger. But in the afternoon, I started to feel sick and weak (and a little hungry). I went shopping and stocked up on organic produce (which was expensive with no Farmer’s markets open today). All the goodies at whole foods were tempting, but only slightly. Then I had the grapefruit juice, which was supper yummy, but it made my tummy hurt. I took an hour nap, then I felt better. Drank some protein shake, and went for an hour and a half walk. While my head felt a little out of it, my body really liked the walk. (I walked to the beach, down the boardwalk and through a nice neighborhood on the edge of Santa Monica. Yay!) I haven’t watched tv all day, as I know that the food ads made things rough for me on the MC. Plus- I consider this a week of detox in as many ways as possible- including psychic detox.

Anyway, if anyone has thoughts, suggestions or feedback, I'd appreciate it.

how did you feel on the master cleanser? I've been thinking about doing that...

I felt great on the MC, actually. I have to say that I'm finding the juice fast to be much easier cravings-wise. But that could also be because the Master Cleanse was my first time.
I do find that on the juice fast, my tummy sometimes gets bloated depending on the kind of juice I make, or sometimes after soymilk (predictably). Never had that issue on the master cleanse. I have a lot of tummy issues in general, since I'm vegetarian, eat a lot of beans, am lactose intolerant, and don't tolerate soy as well as I'd like to. On both fasts, nearly all those issues have disappeared.

The beauty of the MC is that it is so simple and straightforward. The downside is lack of variety. I think that's why the cravings don't seem as strong. However, I am having issues with not being as committed to this one for various reasons, and I can tell it's making a difference.

Good luck with whatever you decide! Fasting feels wonderful!

one thing I couldn't figure out was how to do the master cleanser at work. Did you take all the ingredients with you to mix more while at work? Or just have the MC at home and drink plain ol' water during the work day?

I pre-mixed a couple glasses worth and took to work, then I just took all the supplies with me and mixed more as needed. I had a little hand juicer for citrus that I used. Low-tech and portable. I would not suggest drinking only water at work. You'll get very hungry and possibly feel weak. One thing to know- the longer the mixture sits, the spicier it gets. It was sometimes hard for me to drink, it got so spicy from sitting there for a few hours. Drank water as needed and occasionally some mint tea too.

I actually found it easier to fast at work, as I was distracted.

    DAY 2

    Here’s what I ingested today:
    8 oz tangelo juice
    mint tea
8 oz veggie juice ( 2 carrots, 2 celery, 2 bunch spinach, ginger, lime, lemon, broccoli)
4 oz protein shake (bottled Odwalla)
16 oz fruitjuice (apple, cherry, pomegranate)
6 oz MC lemonade (twice the citrus, 1/2 the syrup)
pear (whole thing- not just juice)
8 oz fruit veggie juice (carrot, celery, beet, apple, ginger, lime)- yummy, by teh way
    8 oz veggie broth
    some water
few bites mango & sticky rice (I couldn’t help myself! Damn my husband!)

    Estimate around 1000-1100 calories.

I felt fine in the morning, and not particularly hungry. Drank juice and tea and was fine. Normal bowel movement in morning (I worry about this part of it). I was going to do the Smooth Move tea, but apparently I don’t need it.

Little queasy after veggie juice (from ginger?). Protein shake makes tummy feel better.

Had a massage, which was heavenly. Walked around pier and saw Ashes and Snow art exhibit. Started to feel light-headed and queasy from standing around for so long.

Once walking again, I felt better, but tired. I don't crave food as I thought I would. I have only a passing interest in it. On day 2, I already have that light, mildly euphoric feeling, and I don't want to eat food and mess it up.

Then…personal family issues and I came very close to giving up. Instead, I sated myself with a pear and had to eat a little of my husband's mango and sticky rice (my very favorite dessert). I have to say that I now feel bloated and icky. So, a little setback, but I’m not eating anything else, and it’s all juice tomorrow.

I started eating too quickly after the Master Cleanse and I regretted it. What’s my f*ing issue that I never learn? Oh yeah, I get hungry.

You can see that I am not being totally hardcore, and I had a smoothie once. I was thinking what’s the big difference? But after eating a little rice and fruit, I can feel the difference. Even that small amount of food messes up the whole liquid fast cleansing thing. Lame.

After I start eating again, I’m going to try to stick to a cleansing, healthy diet as long as possible.

    DAY 3

    8 oz pear, apple, kiwi
6 oz protein drink (bottled odwalla Vanilla Al-Mondo)
    6 oz mint tea
    16 oz watermelon, orange, blackberry
    6 oz orange, tangerine
8 oz veggie (bottled Evolution INcredible Vegetable)

Went to work, which made the fasting a lot easier in general. Felt fine all day, and went for a long walk at lunch.
Started to feel a little queasy and dizzy while standing still too long at the bookstore- it was right after my lunchtime juice.
Feeling bloated and burpy this evening. Not sure why.

Planning to purposely break the fast this evening, as some family issues mean that I will likely be traveling either tomorrow or Friday out of town for a few days, and I want to be in a more normal mode, and not be a bother to anyone.

However, I have tons of fresh fruit and veggies now, and I plan to bring them with me and eat that stuff as much as possible.

One thing is that despite my one slip, it was quite easy. After doing a fast for 8 days, 5 days seems easy, and 3 days seems like I hardly did anything. The timing just isn't right now, and I plan to do another one soon.

I have definitely reset my cravings and tastebuds though- all I want is healthy, yummy stuff. Even the idea of eating fatty food makes me nauseous. Ah well, next time!
