I thought the logs that others have posted were great, and very informative! I hope you guys don't mind that I post mine here too.

So here we go:

-----------------------------------

Pre-Fast
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Before beginning this fast, I was feeling great. I've been healthy and doing regular exercise. My weight lifting regime has been going well, although I really want better definition. I'm happy with my "weight" but I am aiming for a leaner look. The goal of this fast leans closer to fitness goals this time around than to detoxing or mental/spritiual clarity (though gratefully, those are some unavoidable side benefits).

I ate normally up to the day before the fast. For me, "normal" is very healthy. I eat a lot of whole grains and fresh fruit and veggies, beans and organic tofu. I do like sweets, but I didn't have any processed or sugary food or snacks for several days leading up to this fast. I also didn't lower the volume of food I normally eat. I simply stopped my normal eating routine on Sunday night, and began juice fasting on Monday.

  • DAY 1

    Tue, November 30, 2004 - 1:25 PM

    Day 1 -- Monday, Dec. 29th:
    ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Started my fast out WRONG! My planning was just bad all day (and the day before).

I went to work without my juice, so I had to spend the whole day drinking only water and herbal tea. Ugh.

I felt hunger (normal), but by 3pm I was getting a slight headache. If I'd had my juice I doubt I would have had a headache, as I'm sure it was my blood sugar level dropping. I had an afternoon meeting and nearly fell asleep during it. Normally I'd drink a coffee of tea before a tedious afternoon meeting, but of course I'm not drinking caffeine now.

I had to visit a friend immediately after work, and fortunately she had fresh orange juice which I drank at about 4:30. The headache almost immediately disappeared.

On my way home around 6pm I picked up all my fruit and veggies for the next few days. I bought pears, carrots, oranges, apples, celery, beets, pomegranates and a pineapple.

When I got home, I had to rush off to another friend's and didn't have time to juice, so I heated up some tomato juice in the microwave, which I seasoned with Spike and drizzled flax seed oil on it. This is NOT a good fasting meal, as the tomato juice is heat-processed, but it had to do in a pinch.

So, as I said, it was NOT a good first day of fasting!
I considered putting it off one day so that I could be better prepared, but I was already "mentally set" to start today, and was worried that it would throw off my committment if I waited any longer. So I sucked it up and began on schedule.

    Total consumed:
    - 2l of water and herbal tea
    - 500ml orange juice
    - 500ml tomato juice with Spike
    - 1 Tbsp flax seed oil

    Prep for Day 2:
    - made sure I had enough fruit & veggies for juicing the next day.
    - set the alarm early so that I had time to juice before work.
    • DAY 2

      Wed, December 1, 2004 - 9:47 AM
(oops, previous entry should have been labeled "Nov 29th" not December!)

      Day 2 -- Nov 30th
      ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

Had a really good sleep. Woke up early so that I had time to make all my juice for the day. Made 1½ liters of mixed juice. Drank another 250ml for breakfast.
All day I was feeling great. had a few stomach rumbles, but no more than if I'd skipped breakfast on a normal day.

      Drank about 250ml juice around 10:30am, 12:30pm, 3pm, 6pm and 8pm.
Also the usual 2l of water and herbal tea all day.
Had some flaxseed oil before bed.

      Didn't do any exercise today!
Overall, feel great. Good energy. Not tired.

      A very good fasting day!

      Total consumed:
      2l mixed juice
      2l water and herbal tea
      1 Tbsp flaxseed oil
      • Some Frequently Asked Questions

        Wed, December 1, 2004 - 10:36 AM
Here are some things that people often ask me about my fast:

        What do you juice?
        ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
I like to juice just about anything that doesn't make me gag. The list below is the most common things that I juice, and I almost always mix them with each other in various combinations. I try to buy organic whenever possible, especially grapes and apples. The list is in rough order of how often I use them.

        Carrot
        Apple
        Celery
        Orange
        Beet
        Pear
        Lemon
        Grapes
        Yam
        Parsnips

        Do you use supplements?
        ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Alot of the vegetables contain vitamins such as A and E that are only soluble by fat. In other words, your body can't assimilate them unless you have some fat in your diet. So I like to supplement my fast with beneficial oils, such as flaxseed, sunflower, pumpkin, or a blend such as Udo's Choice.

I also like to use psyllium husks every few days after about Day 3 or 4 to help my system flush out. Although prune juice is heat processed and therefore not part of my regular fast, I use it as a supplement the same way I use psyllium. Sauerkraut juice can also be helpful this way (and is also very rich in vitamins).

        Do you drink other beverages?
        ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The only other beverages I drink besides fresh juice is herbal tea, hot lemon, or vegetable broth. For herbal teas, I just choose a variety of my favorites.

I like to make a hot lemon drink with maple syrup and cayenne, but I only use it rarely because it contains way too much sugar and has a very poor nutritional value. It is a great boost though if my blood sugar level is low or I'm feeling tired and cold. It does not replace my juice though.

I drink vegetable broth only as a warm "treat", in addition to my regular juicing. It's very satisfying on a cold day, or when I'm craving something savory. I like to eat it with a spoon to make it feel like a "meal" instead of a drink (so much drinking can get kind of boring!).

        Do you exercise?
        ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
I try to stay active while I fast, but it is essential that I have juice on hand, because a rapid drop in blood sugar can cause you to pass out (or worse). I don't do anything too challenging, and prefer to stick to light aerobic exercise, for much shorter periods than what I usually do. Walks, swimming and leisurely bike rides are perfect.

There would be no point to try to lift weights, even if I did have the energy, because there's no protein in my system during a fast to build muscle. It would be counterproductive and shrink my muscle instead.

What do you avoid during your fast?
        ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
I avoid dairy/animal products, artificial flavorings, colorings, preservatives, pesticides/herbicides, anything processed, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and medications. (I make an exception for "sugar" sometimes when I add a touch of maple syrup or honey to a hot lemon drink.)

Sometimes I have to avoid social situations where I know it will be difficult to avoid some of these things, but usually I can still attend events and stay committed to my fast. Depends on my mood that day.
        • DAY 3

          Thu, December 2, 2004 - 11:46 AM

          Day 3 -- Dec. 1st
          ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

Didn't sleep very soundly for some reason. Had a vague feeling of being somewhat conscious all night. Woke up earlier than usual because I just wasn't tired anymore.

Felt great all day. Definitely notice a mental clarity setting in. No tiredness in the afternoon.
Drank a total of about 2l of mixed juices over the course of the day, about every two hours between 8am and 10pm.
Also the usual herbal teas and water.

My hubby told me I'm starting to get bad breath, which is unfortunately normal for fasting.
I've heard that green tea or parsley can help this, so I might drink some green tea even though it has a little bit of caffeine. And I can add some parsley to my juice.

Was running out of fruit and veggies already, so I picked up some more.

          Flawless fasting day today! Yay!

          Total consumed:
          - 2l mixed juices
          - 2l herbal teas and water
          - 1 Tbsp flax seed oil
          • DAY 4

            Fri, December 3, 2004 - 10:21 AM

[I hope I'm not boring any of you with this!]

            Day 4 -- Dec. 2nd
            ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Had a nice, deep sleep and woke up refreshed.

Nothing too exciting to report. I stuck to my normal juice schedule, same as yesterday.
Except I did curl up with a big cup of hot broth in the evening -- that was yummy!

I also bought a commercial "fresh" juice called Extreme Green that is made from spirulina, chlorella, alfalfa, kelp, spinach, stinging nettle and dulse in a base of apple juice and banana, passionfruit and plum puree with lemon. Doesn't that sound DEEE-licious?!? I like to call it "swamp sludge". But it actually tastes great.

I notice I get cold a lot easier now, so I'm always putting on extra sweaters and socks, or sitting with a blanket around me at home. My feet felt like ice cubes by the time I went to bed.

I weighed myself, and am about 3 pounds lighter, which probably accounts only for the food that I normally carry around in my digestive system. My intestines should be mostly empty by now.

It's been another great fasting day! I'm feeling really good, with an elevated mood and good energy level. In fact, I feel like skipping and jumping when I walk.

            Total consumed:
            - 2l mixed fresh juice
            - 250ml Extreme Green (a.k.a. swamp sludge)
            - 2l Herbal teas & water
            - 250ml hot vegetable broth

I don't want to break your stride with a reply, but you're doing great!!!

              Keep it up.
              • DAY 5

                Sat, December 4, 2004 - 3:58 PM
                Day 5 -- Dec. 3rd
                ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Slept really well again. I woke up before my alarm, but stayed in bed for awhile because it was cozy and warm. Usually it's hard for me to force myself into wakefulness, but while fasting I notice it's really easy to wake up in the mornings. I've been getting my usual 7-8 hours sleep, but that almost feels like too much now.

My system seems to be ridding itself of the last remnants of solid matter. I have had to make sure I'm close to a bathroom at all times. -- Sorry!...I'm kind of embarassed to talk about bodily functions in a public forum, but hey, if you're considering fasting for the first time, you really have to be aware that strange and gross things come out of your body by Day 4, and it's completely normal. These strange and gross things are mostly just stubborn organic matter that has been building up in your system, and the natural flora (beneficial bacteria) that live in your digestive tract. Some people even like to have enemas at this stage in their fast, but I'm not into that personally.

It usually takes about 4 days for your bowels to clear themselves of the organic matter that has accumulated in it. So Day 4 or 5 is a really significant time during a fast. It's an opportunity to "scrub out your insides" by using psyllium. This will help your body get rid of organic matter that is lodged in the crevasses of your intestines. Some sources I've read say that these bits of stubborn organic matter cause toxins and disease, as they sit there decomposing in the corners of your bowels without ever being properly flushed out (this is especially true if you don't consume a lot of fiber).

I'm just really looking forward to the next few days...Day 6 has always been magic for me (I'll tell you why on Day 6!).

The downside today is that I've been just FREEZING all day! Definitely need to wear extra layers. Never notice this when I fast in warmer seasons.

Stuck to my regular juice schedule today, plus had a couple of cups of hot lemon and vegetable broth for warmth.
Added a couple of spoons of psyllium powder to my breakfast juice this morning (stay near a bathroom for about 20 minutes after you do this!).

I also tried a new tea today: made fresh ginger tea by grating fresh ginger root into some hot water. Very yummy and warming.

                Total consumed:
                - 2l fresh juices
                - 2 Tbsp psyllium powder
                - 250ml Extreme Green
                - 250ml hot lemon with maple syrup & cayenne
                - 250ml hot vegetable broth
                - herbal teas and water
                - 1 Tbsp flaxseed oil
                • Stuff on psyllium & water

                  Sat, December 4, 2004 - 3:59 PM

                  On psyllium:
                  ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Psyllium husks are the outer fibrous layers of the seeds of the plantago plant. Psyllium is the main ingredient in the product Metamucil, but is much cheaper when bought in bulk or no-name packaging from a health food store. It is sold either as whole husks or powdered form and should be taken by mixing it with a liquid, which makes it expand into a soft jelly-like texture. The whole husks are hard to swallow, so I recommend the powdered form.

Psyllium is a bulking agent, encouraging peristalsis to occur in the intestine. In other words, it provides some bulk to push through your intestines. This is important while fasting, because if you are not consuming food or fiber, your intestines slow down and stop moving, disabling them from expelling any stubborn unwanted organic matter.

Be careful not to over-use it during your fast. I think using it two or three times during your entire fast (around Day 4 or 5) is plenty.

                  On water:
                  ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Although you drink liquids all day during a juice fast, you still need to drink additional water. This is because the food you normally eat contains a lot of water, so by not eating solid food, you are also reducing the amount of water you consume.
If you're not diligent in drinking additional water and herbal teas, you could actually become dehydrated during a juice fast!
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

                    Day 6 -- Dec. 4th

Day 6! Glorious, clean, untarnished, bright, clear, uncluttered, immaculate Day 6!
It never fails, when I wake up on Day 6 I feel like a new person! All my troubles seem tolerable, and I'm excited to discover what's in store for the rest of my day. I feel reborn! This is the magic I was talking about on Day 4. I feel grateful for my body and so aware of how my body and soul interact together. It's like the string that holds my spirit inside this physical shell has loosened up a bit, and my spirit has been given a long cord of freedom.

Juice feels like ambrosia going down my throat, and I feel so lucky that we have such amazing and wonderful foods on earth to give us life. What a gift it is to have health.
One reason I like to start my fast on Mondays is because then I know Day 6 will start on the weekend and I can enjoy it more (because I don't have to work).

I easily kept to my usual juicing schedule today.
                    - 2l fresh juice
                    - 2l herbal teas & water
                    - 250ml hot veggie broth
                    - 1 Tbsp flaxseed oil
                    • clarity of mind

                      Sun, December 5, 2004 - 8:44 PM

Here's what I mean about gettin' all spiritual n' shit...

Everything I think about has new levels revealed to me. I find myself easily falling into philosophical ponderings, and learning new things about things I thought I knew everything about (including myself). It's like a curtain has been opened, and I can see clearly the things that were only vague shadows before. It's as though I've been filtered and purified.

One reason I think fasting encourages a spiritual sensitivity is because it clears away distractions. I don't have to spend a lot of time buying, planning, preparing, eating and cleaning up after food (it frees up about 2-3 extra hours in my day). And I am 100% me now, without any impurities or foreign substances sullying my mind and body. You haven't been this pure since you were born from the womb.

(See what I mean? This is typical of the kinds of thoughts I have now. )

                          Mon, December 6, 2004 - 6:15 PM

                          Day 7 -- Dec. 5th

I was a pillar of strength on Day 7.
My sister invited me to join her and the family for a nice German Christmas tradition called Advent which involves loads of cakes and cookies and chocolate. I came over anyway, knowing I'd be strong and stick to my juice and tea.

I was so proud! I was inches away from home-baked apple cake, hazelnut cookies, marzipan and other goodies and was satisfied with just enjoying their aroma and drinking my rooibos tea. I admired the sweets, but didn't even feel tempted.

I had also brought over some extra fresh grape juice to share, which everyone oohed and ahhed over because it was so tasty.

I felt so empowered by my willpower.
It was a very successful fast day!

                          Total consumed:
                          2l fresh juice

                          1 Tbsp flax seed oil

                            Day 8 -- Dec. 6th

Nothing too exciting to report. Good energy, good sleep, feel great.

In an effort to make my juices more exciting, I experimented with some new blends. Most of my juices have been based on carrot and/or apple with other things added, so this time I made some more flavorful blends with pineapple, red grapes, pear and honeydew. It's a nice change!

I've also been getting bored of my herbal teas (even though I must have about 20 different varieties!), and I've found that just a mug of plain hot water is just as satisfying.

I miss spicy food and crunchy things, but not enough to tempt me to break my fast.

                            Total consumed:
                            - 2l fresh juices

Again, a pretty normal, on-track fasting day.
Still feeling great. In fact, the juicing has become habit now, so that I feel like I could keep on juicing for a long time...

...but I won't. Day 10 is my last day. As much as I've enjoyed my fast, I am looking to ending it. It's a difficult time of year to fast, with all the holiday treats and special events going on.

I will most look forward to chomping into something crunchy and not being so friggin' freezing all the time!

This is so inspiring to me... I've done 10-days fasts in the past, but somehow over the past 8-9 months or so I have somehow lost my resolve, will or strength to make it through another one. I keep trying, then in a moment of solid food craving weakness...I break it..usually in day 1 or 2. Its so frustrating, and it makes me feel weak and powerless over food. Reading your log reminds me of the wonderful high I get from fasting, and hopefully will help me succesfully do one after the holidays.

                                congrats!!!

Although I've fasted twice a year for several years, I've also failed several times. Sometimes it's just not the "right" time.
I've found it helps to mentally prepare for it about two weeks in advance.
...and if you fail after the first day or two, you can always try again when the time feels more right. Don't beat yourself up over it. Just wait for the right time.

                                    Day 10 -- Dec. 8th

                                    Disaster strikes!
                                    ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
                                    It's my last fasting day!!
Everything was going smoothly, until I realized that I had accepted an invitation to a free cooking class with a group from work. I knew I could go through the class without breaking my fast, but after the class we were all served the food that we ate, and I found it impossible to explain to each person and make excuses and just sit there not eating while everyone was enjoying their amazing meals. So I broke my fast 12 hours early and enjoyed some food.

This can happen when fasting -- it so important to schedule your social life in a way that doesn't interfere with your fast. Your fast has to be #1 priority, or you have no chance to make it successful, as other "important things" will always come up.

I wish I had been able to wait another 12 hours to break my fast, but 12 hours is not the end of the world. Besides, the food was superior quality and made with love. I just couldn't eat very much, because my stomach doesn't have the appetite it did before my fast.

I had a small salad of exotic lettuces, mushrooms stuffed with herbed chevre, and braised veggies in a tomato sauce on top of gnocchi. I was full after only a few bites -- but it didn't stop me from having creme brulle and a chocolate truffle for desert!!

                                    I was so bad.
Don't ever break a fast like this!!

...what I should have done is start with some raw or steamed veggies, a little whole grain or brown rice, and ease myself into regular meals over the course of a week.

I'm going to pretend I didn't fall off the wagon and be more careful the rest of the week.

                                    The moral of the story:
                                    ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
I think the moral of the story here is that every fast cannot be perfect. I will always strive to make it perfect, but life happens. 9½ days is nothing to scoff at, and I'm going to look at the positive and be proud of myself.

                                    Goals achieved:
                                    ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
I weighed myself (before the big meal!) and I lost eight pounds. Three of those I will likely gain back immediately as soon as I eat regularly again.
In addition to "cleaning my slate" and reconnecting myself with my deeper self, my goal was to become leaner so that I can get more definition through my weight training. I haven't been to the gym yet, but I can see that I have less body fat on me. I'm looking forward to lifting some iron again and letting those muscles be seen now that their free of their blanket of fat.

                                    It's not over yet:
                                    ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Despite my little indiscretion at the cooking class, the next 4-7 days will focus on 1) small portions 2) whole foods 3) continuing to avoid anything processed. I don't have any exact criteria for the post-fast days, so if any of you have any suggestions, I'd love to have some advice!

                                      Just a little followup:

It's now been one month since I ended my fast.
The christmas season has definitely lured me to eat more than I should have and things that were not so good for me! I'm not overly stressed about it -- it's inevitable. I gained back all the weight I lost during my fast, but not more.

In some ways I feel like I've undone most of the detoxifying I accomplished with the fast...so I think next year I'll try it in January or February instead.

I'm thinking of doing mini one-day fasts weekly for awhile just to see what happens, because I've never done that before. Mostly just to keep my willpower in shape.

I was very inspired by your log, your steadfastness and your commitment to keep doing it and trying new things.

we can get so attached and wrapped up in food...

                                        thanks for the inspiration..

Well it seems I found my resolve somewhere because I am on day 6 of the master cleanse today. woo-hoo!. Usually I get really goofy and have an etherial buzz around day 6-7 but oddly I hit my goofy period this time on days 2-3, and that etherial floatiness hasn't hit me yet. I feel pretty grounded and am just cruising steady. I've been working out a lot and doing yoga this time and feel pretty darn good. Unfortunately its been storming down here the past few days and I am also having a really hard time keeping warm.

I think I'm going to try your psyillium "scrub" and see what happens.
