Someone help me please. I've had this problem for years but I drink water all the time, eat a fair amount of veggies and fruits, and I exercise reguarly. So what else might be the cause of my lack of bowel movements? I went on a juice fast last weekend combined with cayenne pepper supplements from a dr. Schultz here in Southern California. I think it helped a little bit but I don't feel any strong, permanent change from it, at least not what other people have reported.

You're eating too much and too fast. The food is going in faster than it can be processed.

Do you take any Acidophilus, at least 3 pills, 3 times a day, and take Psyllium 3 times a day.
It sounds like your digestive system is lacking enzymes and acidophilus so you might want increase these.

Mon, September 3, 2007 - 12:20 AMPsyllium husk is excellent. i'll second that for sure.
Also, it might be a good idea to do a colon cleanse.
Another cause of constipation, from personal recent experience would be frequent consumption of very hot and spicy food...depending on how sensitive you are with food like that. -

Re: Causes of constipation?
Sun, September 9, 2007 - 5:22 PMHmmm that is odd cuz I thought spicy food induces bowel movements. But my acupuncturist brother-in-law told me the same thing, that constipation at my age is most likely due to excessive internal heat which of course can only be exacerbated by spicy food. I am currently taking some herbs he made me.
Before this, I was on some supplements from a Dr. Schultz here in Southern Cali. It had cayenne pepper, psyllium seed, and some other ingredients in them. I'm gonna try a variety of methods before I decide which is best for me. Next on my list is turkey rhubarb, a colon cleanse supplement.
Thanx everyone for the suggestions thus far! -

Re: Causes of constipation?
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 4:02 AMPsyllium husks, herbs, cayenne pepper and all these other things are really just masking the symptoms here though arent they?! You are constipated because your digestive system is under stress, and it is understress for a reason. You need to adress that reason.
What is a 'fair amount of fruits and veggies'. Are the fruits ripe? Are you eating more fruit or more veggies? Do you eat meat, grains, refined foods, dairy? How do you handle your emotions? Are you relaxed, assertive? Are you drinking enough water?
There are A Lot of causes of constipation, and all of them linked to diet and emotions. Would need to know more....
