So does anyone have a definitive answer on what causes these and how to sucessfully eliminate them?
I have been battling them for years now, and where as I used to think it was because I smoke a lot of pot, I have learned that there is definitely another cause (I have friends who are MUCH bigger stoners than me and thier eyes are clear).
I know the standard get lots of sleep bit, but I am more interested what internally can be causing this. My latest research leads towards malnutrition, and possible B or C vitamin deficiency.
I have also read that almond oil topically can help, but again this is treating the symptoms vs. getting @ the cause.
Any ideas or info? :-)
Thanks!

Re: Dark circles under eyes
Tue, June 15, 2004 - 11:54 AMI have heard of several things that could cause this, I can't think of anything specific, but I did recently hear a doctor talking on the radio about it and he said that some people just have them naturally. Try looking on webmd.com.

Sun, June 20, 2004 - 8:01 AMi don't know about this...but wanted to introduce you to a tribe i belong to:
marijuana anonymous
www.marijuana-anonymous.org/
When I do a heavy duty fast (over 3-5 days,) sometimes my eyes look a little sunken into my head. But a day after I end it with some fruit, they return to normal. I heard that the actual eyes can be used as a map to the internal organs, and what is actually messed up. Sorry, I don't have a link for this, but I'm sure you can find out more on-line.

Re: Dark circles under eyes
Tue, July 13, 2004 - 3:58 PMDark circles under the eyes are usually due to adrenal exhaustion. Licorice is the herb of choice. Don't use it for more than two weeks and don't take it if you're on other meds. It has minerocorticosteroid effects so check with your doctor. Check out homeopathics as well at: www.elixirs.com/prodSearch.cfm
Also, stop stressing out your adrenals. You need them, they're an important part of your immune system. The fact that you're experiencing symptoms of adrenal exhaustion means you need to slow down whatever you're doing that is taxing your system. Good luck. -

What are dark circles under the eyes?
Dark circles are formed by the same biological process that causes bruises to turn dark blue/purple.
When something strikes your skin, small blood vessels are ruptured. Blood leaks into the surrounding tissue. Your body has a system in place to deal with this, and an enzymatic reaction starts breaking down the leaked blood so your body can metabolize it. A side-effect of this process is that the waste products are the familiar dark purple-blue of a bruise.
The delicate skin around the eyes (also called peri-orbital skin) is very thin. This skin is nourished by a web of capillaries. From time to time, these capillaries leak small amounts of blood. As the body's enzymatic reaction goes to work, the same purple-blue coloration is produced beneath the skin, leading to dark circles. (It's more visible under the eyes because the skin there is so delicate and thin, and in many people, more translucent.)
Dermalex-MD works by accelerating the enzymatic process that gets rid of the purplish coloration. Other ingredients strengthen capillaries, effectively helping to prevent dark circles before they even start.
What causes dark under eye circles?
Most people think dark under-eye circles are caused by staying up too late. This isn't the case: in fact, lack of sleep makes the skin around the eyes paler, allowing the purplish color to be more visible. Anything that makes your face paler (illness, menstruation, etc.) make dark circles look darker.
Spending time in the sun also makes dark circles look darker. Allergies can cause dark circles to appear (sometimes simply due to rubbing the eyes!).
The primary "cause" of dark circles is hereditary. You inherit from your parents the genes that determine the strength of the capillaries in your skin -- determining exactly how "leaky" these capillaries are. Furthermore, heredity can determine the thickness and opacity of the skin around your eyes, which can make dark circles look even worse.

Re: Dark circles under eyes
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 4:17 AMHey Jason,
It really depends where the dark circles are. Ie. How low down they go. If you smoke alot of pot you almost certainly have nutritional deficiencies, since it depletes so many nutrients, and this could be linked to problems such as adrenal fatigue, kidney problems and dirty blood.
Generally speaking, the lower down the dark circles go, the more likely the adrenals are involved. Dark circles higher up can indicate liver detoxification phase 2 problems, or kidney problems, or lymphatic issues. I generally consider dark circles under eyes, that are pretty high up, to be a sign of dirty or stagnant blood. The cleanest under-eyes I have ever seen, are from a guy who I used to do lots of Qigong/Tai Chi with. He does alot of energy work and exercises more vigorously than anyone Ive met (quality, rather than quanitity here).
As for nutrient deficiencies, you are almost certain to have nutrient deficiencies across the spectrum, but I very much doubt that by supplementing you will get rid of those dark circles.
I reckon you're gonna have to do some major house cleaning; getting rid of the pot, eating A LOT of fruit, getting rid of refined carbohydrates, cutting down on fat and protein, exercising, sleeping, relaxing.
Hope this helps.
Take Care
