Just one week ago, I completed a 40 day juice fast. I felt SO fantastic during the fast, and I knew the transitioning out period would be difficult, but I hadn't anticipated that being on spring break, without a set schedule, would leave me so vulnerable to "grazing" at inappropriate times. I ended up eating too much too soon, and am still paying for it with some general discomfort. On the advice of a veteran faster friend, I'm now doing a few more days on just broth, juice, and tea, to get rid of the bloat and help my body find its happy medium a bit more gently! Do any of you have any advice for how to deal with the many aspects (physical, psychological, spiritual) of feeling "let down" after a fast, and how to negotiate the transition back into real-life eating without losing one's health gains? Please share!

Re: Transitioning out of a fast -- tips, set-backs, wisdom to share?
Sat, April 22, 2006 - 12:21 PMwell if you make healthy food choices there isnt a let down period. at least in myself this is what i noticed. when i ate even slightly badly my stomach and digestion reacted to things like they did when i was really little.
you have an order of foods you reintroduce back into your diet:
fruits → veggies → grains/starches → meat and protiens
processed stuff felt ughjkshj in my system for about 6 months. i should not be eating that crap anyway though.
my digestion felt extra sensitive for about a month after a longer fast.
water water and more water. to keep everything moving through you.
a guide to what your body can deal with well...you should feel a burst of energy from your food within 20 minutes. if you feel sluggish...that food is not agreeing with you for whatever reason.
good luck and congrats on the 40 day juice fast. -
